« on: July 19, 2015, 10:27:34 PM »

* Budget - Around $50 - $150 Canadian with a little wiggle room

* Requirements for Isolation - A lot of isolation and as little leak as possible
* Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-Ear goes around ears and Comfortable for long periods of time
* Preferred tonal balance - Idk really what i want. Is there a way to figure out your preference without trying headphones? But if i were to guess Clear highs and strong Lows.
* Past headphones - ATH M40x
* Preferred Music - Mostly Electronic (Tropical, Melodic, House, Deep House, Future House) then Indie/Garage Rock, Indie Pop, Rap, Hip Hop.
* Overall usage - Mostly Listening to music at home and outside in public quite environments and Gaming.
* What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I'm giving my m40x away.Im pretty happy with it i just want to know if theres a better option or if i should buy it again or get the m50x?
* Location - Canada

I want as immersing an experience as possible.
*Edit- I'm open to the idea of buying used headphones

Thanks a lot for the help guys!

V-Moda XS or Takstar Pro 80 will probably be your best bet.

Welcome to Changstar  ahoy Did you check out the "new members" thread?

In doubt the Koss KSC75 is one of the best starter headphones.

If you want isolation go for DJ-headphones that have good reputation and try a few out. The HD25, K181DJ, DT1350 and M50(X) should all be good options if you are not picky.

However as you do not state what sound you prefer go for a headphone that responds well to equalising and is known to be pretty even/flat in sound.

If in-ears are something you want to try you can find good ones for 50 Dollars or less that meet your needs.

Good isolation, around ears, Canadian...

If you have a local Long-McQuade, there should be some headphones on display to try out.
Senn HD280 ($109): ok-ish sound, very good isolation, clamps hard (comfort varies)
Senn HD380 ($149): as above, maybe slightly better sound, maybe more comfortable
Pioneer HDJ-500 ($119): better sound, ok isolation, on-ear
Sony MDR-7510 ($150): decent all-rounder; maybe better for gaming than the others
AKG 550DJ ($125): decent all-rounder

On the used market you might find a DT770 in your budget. Rivals the HD280 for isolation, better sound overall, trumps it for cleaner & stronger bass. A used Momentum would also suit you if you can find it within budget; good comfort and isolation, and sonically I'd take it over everything else I've mentioned so far.

V-Modas do not have good isolation.

The Noontec HammoS is nice. Purrin has a review on the forums here, I've got one over at headfi. Decent isolation, bassy-ish but not overbearing, $110.

Of course there's the M50x, but that's over your budget if buying in Canada (unless you can find one used).

Do you think there may be an acoustic leak from the jack hole? ~Tyll Hertsens

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

This might get me burned as a witch, but I use a pair of Bose AE2 headphones (now sold as Bose SoundTrue Around-Ear) for casual listening to Youtube videos and such. The sound isn't great but it's not too bad, the isolation is decent, they're lightweight with good comfort. Also I can easily slide one earcup off my ear if I want to be able to hear outside sounds.

I've heard better closed phones, such the Noontec Zoro and Creative Aurvana Live, but they had poor isolation which defeats the purpose of closed phones in the first place. The NAD Viso HP50 has much better sound quality, and good isolation but it is out of his price range and not as comfortable as the Bose.

If I want isolation in public I would use in-ear monitors rather than lug full-sized phones around. I like my Apple In-Ear Monitors, but I haven't heard much of the competition other than the Etymotic Er6i which I don't like as much as the Apples.

I use a pair of Beyer DT-1350 at work. If you can find a good pair used that might fit you needs. They do have some variabilty so be aware of that.

I really like my Superlux HD681 Evo, can't say much about the sound because I don't have much experience with anything else more expensive, but they are really nice for games, nice soundtage and separation (if you're into FPS games), and very comfy with the velour earpads that comes with it, I can use it for hours without problem. You could do some Solderdudes mods to it too!

I guess you could find one for $50 there and get the others $100 to buy another headphone with nice isolation...
Well I don't eve know if this is a nice idea...  ::)

- On-Ear goes around ears

Can you clarify this? An around the ear (full-sized) or on the ear (supra-aural)?
