I think he meant around ear and just said on ear to make sure we wouldn't recommend iems but who knows tho. M40x is surprisingly good, wickedly clear sound for the $80 or whatever it costs. I think you should get the m50X just because it's a similar sound with more sub bass and smoother highs, the soundstage or "immersiveness" is quite a bit better as is the comfort. Get one used from Amazon see if it falls in your budget. If not get a Takstar pro80 or UE6000

I really like my Superlux HD681 Evo, can't say much about the sound because I don't have much experience with anything else more expensive, but they are really nice for games, nice soundtage and separation (if you're into FPS games), and very comfy with the velour earpads that comes with it, I can use it for hours without problem. You could do some Solderdudes mods to it too!

I guess you could find one for $50 there and get the others $100 to buy another headphone with nice isolation...
Well I don't eve know if this is a nice idea...  ::)

It is a nice idea. Do you have any idea why Solderdude has so much knowledge about Superlux headphones? Their value-for-money performance is really good.

I use HD280s for DJ work.  Their strong suit is that they isolate like champs.  Quite comfortable as well despite the strong clamping force.  Sound wise they are OK for the sub $100 bracket but I think you can do better for the money.

Are you willing to consider an IEM?  Something like a Hifiman RE400 is really good bang for buck.

I use a pair of Beyer DT-1350 at work. If you can find a good pair used that might fit you needs. They do have some variabilty so be aware of that.
If you get these under $150, I haven't heard anything better in the price range.

Keep in mind that OP said full-sized / around ear, not on-ear / supra-aural.

Not quite as good as some of the wired solutions here, but very close and extremely budget friendly: Meelectronics Air-Fi Matrix2 AF62. Very good neutral sounding headphone. I personally like it more than both the M40x and M50x, though it might not have quite the strong lows that you're looking for.

Refurbs are on Amazon for $60 U.S. right now. I actually saw one go for as low as $47 Canadian (~$36.00 U.S.) recently because no one is watching ebay very closely.
