what is best measuring R2R NOS filterless dac?  Any price, any era,I simply want to get dac that spits out perfect square waves...

Get Yggy. See Yggy measurements here: http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2405.0.html

It does the best squares evar. Yggy also has best impulse with least amount of ripple.

There is no such thing as filterless DAC. NOS DACs put out rounded square waves, not real square waves.

Forget it, just by Total DAC d1-twelve for 30,000 euro. you should be all set.

ODAC obviously.  The new upcomming ODAC2 is actually worse in this regard.

Why would you want to accurately reproduce squarewaves and would like to reproduce sinewaves with jagged edges/steps ?
If you want sharp squarewaves and needle pulses to listen to you should buy a tone generator instead, they are much cheaper.
They do nice sinewaves as well.

There are NO squarewaves in any audio signal ONLY sinewaves.
It should be priority to have the sinewaves reproduced correctly, then there is no ringing either.

When you are concerned about 'attack' and 'speed' then you should have a closer look at your 'fastest' sounding recording and use an audio program to zoom in on the area where the attack is.
Zoom in to sample level.
Use 192kHz samples as a minimum for this.
Tell me how many samples it takes for the fastest slope you see to rise and how much (dB) it rises per sample.

Then ponder WHY you would ever feel a DAC should be able to reproduce a digital generated signal that does NOT exist in ANY (music) recording out there.

First investigate what real life signals look like and then you do not EVER have to worry about any squarewaves in DAC's and the ringing outside the audible bands.
NO DAC's ring within the audible band NOR are the large HF signals present that could let the reconstruction filters ring.
Also consider the fact that 'ringing' you see is also a natural occurance for a bandwidth limited system.

Just my 2 cts though.

P.S.
IMO you should be less 'demanding' and rude on here ... its not HF you know.

Get a soekris R2R and run it in NOS - example square wave captures in this thread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/269776-filter-brewing-soekris-r2r.html.
Analogue filter operates at 270 kHz, plenty of bandwidth for your square waves.

If you want nice sine waves (recommended for audio), keep running DAC in NOS but up sample in PC to 352/384 KHz to bypass first up sample filter.

Hang on, I thought this was deleted. Am I in some crazy parallel universe or something?
