Sony R10 (unbalanced drivers) Measurements
« on: April 28, 2012, 02:57:33 AM »

Putting these here in the members section vs. public. This is a pair with a known driver imbalance. I've heard it and suspected it was more frequency response imbalance rather than just volume.

This pair sounded very bassy - but we all know what wierd things channel imbalance can do. Right channel does look awesome though.

Are the drivers rotting away or did it come from the factory like that?

I'm sure it's rotting.  Makes you wonder about the Denons and that ToTL fostex.  Recall Tylls measurements of the old and new Denons.  He should measure them again in another 10 years.

Maybe the cups should have a little hatch for silica gel packets or something...

It could be the foam rings inside which disintegrate over time.  One of my bass light R10s had pretty much no foam rings inside anymore but I have two new sets of outer foam rings (different densities) to help with things like bass roll off.

He brought that set to my house once and I tested them on a mono recording and definitely heard an imbalance.  I guess I got lucky that the track I picked highlighted the range of FR that shows imbalance.  I'm not crazy about that R10 though...it's dark sounding which is crazy for a R10.  His other set (bass light) is amazing though.

I'll have to find some time to come by your place and let you measure a bunch of my headphones.

Is that little deal at 4k something that might be an issue?

Thanks for posting these.
