I know what it is: I used to use a soundcard ...and I still have an Echo Audiofire2, though I have not recorded anything for ages.

Maybe I should have said Isn't ADCing music to data relative simple compared to DACing data to music?

That is, isn't the sampling process simpler/less-demanding than the reconstruction process?

On paper (super-simplified, as i'm no expert either) it is easier because  the adc needs to put marks down on on right spots on intensity-time coordinates but dac needs to fill in between these spots too. In essence filtering is more difficult for D-A conversion as i have understood. The big reason why Ygg is so special, probably.

The topic of recording is interesting in the context of this.
Not every recording studio possesses good R-2R dac. So for engineer's ears with D-S dac the outcome is not the same as for a person who listens to Yggradsil or Theta or even lowly Dam dac, etc.
I know studios near to me are using RME/Motu stuff at best and are extremely proud of themselves.
Years ago I produced some electronic music and it is sounding nothing like I made it to be while listening today through the Dam dac.
There are artifacts and tones I never knew existed, even tonal balance is very different.

Ah, ok, I get you now. The ADC has an anti-alias filter which imparts evils similar to the DAC reconstruction filter. Some of my colleagues are recording at higher sample rates to minimize these effects in the ADC, which are mostly delta-sigma these days. Any modification due to the anti-alias filter, jitter, quantization levels, linearity, etc. by the ADC is now part of the recording, forever.

Yep. What Priidik says applies, but is probably an  oversimplification.

Mike just needs to recreate the GAIN System, but make it fit in a Rag/Yggy sized box.   :&

I don't claim to know much about ADC ICs, but Analog makes a few interesting non-sigma-delta parts, like this one.

24 bits, but up to 7.6ppm INL. Monotonic 24 bits, but 18 bits INL. Not good enough. Any other SAR type ADCs? Maybe from BB, wait I mean TI; or National Semi, wait I mean TI. Linear?

Purrin, when playing ADC buzzword-bingo what should we look for? Linear has a pretty good looking ADC - http://www.linear.com/product/LTC2378-20

One thing that I hope everybody understands is that whilst DAC is an acronym, ADC is merely an abbreviation.

(I suppose it could be pronounced haddock)
