Wasn't the GAIN system ridiculously large, heavy and expensive? (like... upwards of six figures?)

Technology has improved since then. Let's all look at datasheets from the big three or four chipmakers and guess!

  • You'd do it for Randolph Scott.

Maybe call it CRAP or DUNG.

What I would like to experience is the following:
1 great group of acoustic musicians in a space with exemplary acoustics
2 Neumann KU-100 binaural head mic system located appropriately in the space
3 Gordon 5 mic preamps
4 Mike Moffat ADC reciprocal to Yggdrasil
5 Gain staging such that program peaks are -6dBFS (hint excellent engineer at controls)
6 absolutely no modifications to the data stream, not even gain adjustments
7 Playback of stored data via Yggdrasil
8 Excelent headphone amp, in my case ZDSE
9 HD800 and TH900 headphones

Everything in that chain currently exists except the R2R closed form anti-alias filter ADC.

Addendum:
Thanks to those that pointed out the Pacific Microsonics Two ADC. While probably not having a closed form anti-aliasing filter, it is an R2R ADC. So searching out music recorded at studios using the PM2 ADC is probably a worthwhile effort. Anyone with favorites that would fall in this category, please speak up.

Ahem, have you heard the ZD Super? Don't. It'll spoil your plans.

Why would it spoil my plans? Should sound even better. If provided the caps and wire I'm capable of making the necessary mods to bring the ZDSE be consistent with the super. Be interesting to measure before and after performance on the analyzers.

Heck, if you can do the upgrades yourself, do eeet! Measure that stuff too!! Have you ever been able to do an objective cap comparison?

Isn't ADCing music relative simple compared to DACing it?

or did I get that hopelessly wrong? Yep... I'm not an engineer.

One good way to assess dac-->adc performance is to hook an analog synthesizer direct to good amp-->phones/speakers and then compare the sound to adc recorded signal from dac-->amp-->phones/speakers. Less variables than recording live sounds. Analog synths can be surprisingly resolving/liquid too.

Like most of my life, I have more projects than time. Still working for corporate, currently at a pace of approx 70+ hrs/wk so I don't get to my projects very often. Hopefully I only have a few more weeks of this as I oversee one of my inventions into product development. When I do get some precious down time, I am selfishly listening to the ygg + ZDSE + HD800 / TH900. I continue to be amazed at what I am hearing.

The ADC is for those of us that work the music capture / recording side of the chain. How the music was digitized in the first place.
