Was wondering if any Pyrates had the opportunity to demo the new Audio Technica ATH-R70x? Audio Technica states the following on their website:

"Audio-Technica’s first pair of professional open-back reference headphones. Together with the ATH-M70x, they stand as a flagship model in A-T’s professional headphone lineup. eaturing specially designed drivers and acoustically transparent housings fashioned from aluminum honeycomb mesh, these headphones provide an accurate and natural open-back sound. They also incorporate a new, improved design of our popular 3D wing support system to provide even greater comfort during the prolonged use often required in professional settings. Robust yet lightweight, and equipped with a unique, dual-sided detachable cable that automatically maintains proper stereo orientation (no matter how it’s attached), the R70x headphones are built for lasting comfort, convenience and audio purity.

High-efficiency magnets and pure alloy magnetic circuit design reduce distortion and ensure accurate and extended high-frequency response
Carbon composite resin improves structural rigidity to provide detailed transient response
Acoustically transparent, aluminum honeycomb-mesh housings provide a natural and spacious open-back sound
Breathable fabric earpads and improved wing support provide excellent long-wearing comfort
Feather-light weight (approx. 210 g w/o cable) and robust construction make headphones perfectly suited for professional use
Unique, dual-sided detachable locking cable is L/R signal independent, always ensuring proper stereo orientation"

I am very interested in hearing these, they look promising! Below are a few pics:

It does look like an interesting headphone. Anybody heard it yet?

  • In the end... cats.

stumbled on reviews of this yesterday and wondered too,

After my ATH-AD900, I so wanted wings again, but friends introduced me to the HD600, and convinced us we'd be happy together. We are, of course, after the initial ups and downs of getting to know each other --- but if this ATH-R70x had been around then...

I own a pair now :) I like them.

Some of this is copy pasted from a little article I wrote comparing the R70x and the AD1000x:

The R70x is the least 'Audio Technica' sounding headphone I have ever heard from Audio Technica. The Audio Technica house sound tends to be quite sculpted, with a emphasis on the upper mids and a de-emphasis on the bass. AT cans are considered by many to be masters at female vocal delivery and an open, airy kind of sound.

The R70x is definitely a departure from that sound, with a much more balanced presentation with no strong emphasis in any particular frequency region. If anything, it tilts towards the lower registers - not because it's a bassy can (again the key word is balanced) but simply because the treble is polite and doesn't really steal focus.

Over the past days I've had a really enjoyable time with the R70x because it's an excellent all rounder well suited for long listening periods.

Think of it as a more solid sounding Sony MDR-MA900. It's doesn't seem to have as much clarity or detail as my AKG K712 (maybe because of the polite treble) but the low frequencies are a little more satisfying.

A lot of people want to see how similar it is to the HD600 (they seem similar based on description) but I haven't had the chance to do a direct comparison myself.

By low frequencies being more satisfying than the K712, what do you mean exactly? Cleaner, more slam, more overall quantity, or what? (And, of course "more satisfying" to you may mean less bass in comparison.)

I haven't quite put my finger on how the bass compares to the AKG K712 in terms of control and slam. The R70x just has more of it than the K712, which I find satisfying. Not that the K712 doesn't have a lovely bass response. The R70x just sounds richer.

So this sounds like the opposite of their existing open headphones...more bass, more polite treble. Too bad you haven't compared directly to the HD600/650, because I'd be most curious about that. Gotta say, though...R70X sounds appealing after what you just said.

Yes, its basically the most 'un-Audio Technica' Audio Technica open can I have heard. I will try to compare to the HD600/HD650 when I get the chance (many many people have asked this question) but my gut feeling is that it isn't dramatically better or worse than the Sennheisers.

  • You'd do it for Randolph Scott.

Seems a little similar to what AKG did with the K7XX, which is bring up the bass enough to have a more balanced sound.

So does the K7XX have more bass than the K712? Or just more than the K702? I've always been confused about that.
