I think both the K712 and K7XX have more bass than the K702. K712 and K7XX are very, very similar if not basically identical. Or so I've read.

My thoughts from NAMM a while back:

Quote (selected)
R70x: These did not impress me. Felt cheap. Bit grainy, lo-fi sounding. I think I was picking up on some bass distortion. I'll give these another chance under quieter conditions but at the quoted MSRP (even though AT's MSRPs are wildly inaccurate) I don't expect these to be much of a competitor.

More than anything I remember greatly preferring the M70x that was sitting beside it.

In terms of comparing to HD600...well... :-Z :-X :))

Yes. With this headphone and much lesser known TAD series (TAD300, 400 and 500) are solid evidence that Audio Technica CAN make natural-sounding headphones without typical AT sound coloration present on AT's high end cans.

Well, it just seems like your sort of can. On the leaner side and treble forward?

I thought the M70x was fairly well balanced and behaved. A slightly forward or emphasized "monitor" sound perhaps but mostly unobtrusive.

Do the lo-fi-ish qualities of the R70x not bother you?

Well saying it's lo-fi is already implying something bad about them...

I find them a safe pair of hands. I adore the MDR-MA900 despite its slightly sloppy presentation at times. The R70x is an overall improvement. I wouldn't personally describe them as grainy at all though. To me they're pretty darn clean. They don't have the immediate clarity in the highs that the AKG K712 has (which has more texture overall in the upper regions) but I'm still not sure if it's a quantity or quality thing.

Overall I still can't decide if I like the K712 or the R70x more, but the R70x seems like the better all rounder to me. The R70x is the kind of can where I can throw on any track from any genre and still be pretty darn happy, which is not something I can always say about the K712. It also helps that I find them super comfortable, which for me is literally at least as important as the sound.

Did you ever hear the MA900?

As for the M70x I quite like it and use it around the house. It's detailed and forward without being too aggressive for me. But I really don't like the sound when I'm outside the house. The background noise forces me to turn up the volume and at that point the treble becomes too much for me.

No I never did.

I'd be interested to hear the R70x again I suppose. But they certainly had that (relatively) lo-fi grain and lack of clarity when I heard them. Now that I think of it, just about all of the open back AT's (AD2Kx, AD2K [lesser extent], AD900) have a bit of that sound. I would equate the effect to a woofer running out of steam.
