HD600/HD650 upgrade
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:21:41 AM »

I'm considering upgrading from my DT990 Pro 250 to an HD600 or an HD650. I'm more inclined to go for an HD600 given that it is a little brighter and I kind a come from bright cans. While I find very likely that this will be an upgrade, we are talking 2x the price and not sure I'll get 2x the sound (vs equalized DT990 by 'bout -8dB tremble)

I'm also considering the HD518 and HD558 given their price and sound signature. However, I don't know if going to these is a downgrade from my DT990 Pro. I have heard the HD518, and I thought they were pretty good, but I have not done A/B comparisons. I have not heard any of the other Sennheisers.

I will. I'm putting my DT990 + my Audeos for sale on Amazon...

EDIT: BTW, I heard a lot 'bout the HD580. A coworker has it, but the bastard won't bring it to let me hear it. I've heard it has the same drivers as the HD600... Do they sound similar?

What are you going to drive them with?  I say HD600 as well regardless just based on coming from the DT990.

I have no idea what I'm going to use to drive them  :( ... Suggestions?

BTW you guys also think the HD600 has my name vs. the HD650? ... I have the crappy but somewhat darker HD202 and I like 'em too :)

Just listened to the 580s again this past Saturday (MKubota1's).  We had 580/600/650/800.

The 580s sounded better than I remember blessingx's sounded when I borrowed his and listened with 600s.

580s sounded a little less forward in the vocals/mids which increased the bass a bit.  Pretty good!

So one pair of 580s I didn't like as much- blessingx with metal grills.  One pair I liked just as well but a bit different from 600 (MKubota1's) with gray plastic stock grills.

As for 600 vs. 650?  Spent a couple of weeks with them side-by-side when I borrowed Kevin Brown's.  Definitely prefer the 600 to the 650.

Sometimes I prefer the 600 to the 800.  For the second time, I listened to the 600s out of a McIntosh 2105 headphone out this past Saturday.  Damn.  Beat the Super 7 with the 600.

1-Care to elaborate?

2-Using HD800 tubes in the S7 for the 600 or no?

3-No mention of the HD800 from the McIntosh?

I'll bet they sounded good from the  McIntosh...?  I listen to the 600's from my vintage Pioneer a lot and they are fantastic.  A good vintage amp could be a good cheap driver for you to start with.

1-Care to elaborate?  Without your foam mod, the 6k and treble do need to be tamed and I like the detail but the midrange of the 600 is pretty great.  With the McIntosh- it's the best that I have heard the 600.  Had to try it again on a different occasion to confirm

2-Using HD800 tubes in the S7 for the 600 or no?  Did not roll the S7 specifically for the 600s.

3-No mention of the HD800 from the McIntosh?  Didn't like them as much as the 600s out of the McIntosh (without foam mod).  Sounded artificially tipped up.

My purpose in saying some of the things I have said is that the 600s can sound great.  And they can scale.  ultrabike does not "have to" feel like he is "settling" with 600s if that is his budget.  Twice I have heard the 600s sound good enough to make me search 2105 prices...  HOPE Sennheiser doesn't stop production before I grab me another pair.
