Has anyone that has owned several pairs noticed some sound better than others?

I think I’ve owned at least 5 or so pairs of 580s in 10 years, and I love these phones especially the comfort factor when the pads and headband are broken in. I've owned a few 650s, and could never really warm up to them.

I have an HD600 and HD580 now. The HD600 have brand new pads. The 580 have super worn down pads, to the point that there is maybe 1-2 mm of actual padding once they are compressed against your face. The 580s have a more pleasing midrange but give up a wee bit of the bass snap the 600s do. Treble is similar-ish on both.

I thought this could be a pads issue, but swapping pads on the two phones, they still retain their respective tonal qualities. With the new pads and the phones sitting further away from the ears there is a slight increase in soundstage front to back and the sound being further back.

Next up the pantyhose mod. When I did listening tests on a different pair of 580s I could not tell much of a difference between the pantyhose and the stock foam inserts. Has anyone tried this mod? I’d be interested in seeing measurements as well, I think this mod originated for the 650s and was later adopted by others to the 580/600.

purrin if you have free time and are willing - I’d mail you down my 580s for measurement. Though I am not so sure how representative they are of other 580s...

I did the pantyhose mod back in the day.  Was funny buying nothing but one pair of panyhose at Walgreens.

Just taking the foam out completely should have the same effect, and I felt it made the treble a bit peaky and sharp and I always wound up putting the foam back in.  I actually don't think moar treble is what the phones need.  They do lack some clarity, but I think the problem either lies in the upper mids as Purrin's FR graph alludes to, or it is a speed or damping issue.  But they look pretty fast and clean in the CSD's and I would think being overdamped would have the opposite effect, and give them a lot of clarity at the expense of natural tonality.  But I don't know, these are just guesses.

Definitely. I'd love to measure the 580s. I think someone has the 600s too, but has been holding out on me.

I gave my 600s to my friend (he has the 2105).  Mkubota happened to have a family member's pair that he reconditioned...

If I get another pair I'll send them down for sure.

I have heard two pairs of 580 and liked one pair better than another (but by memory).  Could be good to get multiple measurements of them if I can get a hold of any to send.  They are said to be the same drivers/almost the exact same phone but in direct comparison to 600s, I didn't think they were exactly the same.  (Had two different sets of 580/600 out of the Benchmark at different times.)

Cool, I'll find a time to send you a message in the coming weeks.

the hd600 should overall be better than the 990 for the reputation the 600's get. i had an opportunity in the past to get a 580 cheap but turned it down. i forgot why though. the hd580 and 600 are the only sennheisers i'm actually interested in and might still in the near future try to get one or at least try a pair.

Thanks Rex. Once I get rid of the extra headphone weight I'll very likely get the 600s. The ESP950 looks kind of tempting.
