Great recordings thread
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:57:30 PM »

I was thinking we should start a great recordings thread - where the exact CD, date of manufacturer, etc. is indicated (also include bad issues too so we can avoid them.) For example, not all remasters are bad, but it would be nice to know which ones are the good ones.

CD?  :'(

j/k. This is one of my true reference recordings. Sonny Rollins Way Out West. Recorded by Roy DuNann, so really any CD or LP will sound good, but this one is mastered by Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray and pressed on 45 rpm vinyl so it just kills. I feel fortunate to own nearly all the 45 rpm reissues on Contemporary/Prestige/Blue Note.

My CD of Way Out West sounds better...almost the same natural tone but....no clicks, pops, etc....   ;)

Do you have "The Poll Winners" on 45RPM?

I wasn't aware Concord Jazz Group were handing out master tapes  :P  :-*

No clicks or pops on this copy. I played it a few nights ago on my SR-Omega which are brutal on any noise.

I do have The Poll Winners, but frankly find the music too boring. I with the few Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor albums on Contemporary were remastered by SH/KG. Instead Acoustic Sounds as usual plays it safe /rant off.

Really?!

The Poll Winners is one of my favorite jazz albums of all time but I don't have the 45RPM version.

I have a few of those 45RPM's and they are wonderful. 99% click/pop free.

I should have prefaced by saying I am not huge into west coast jazz. Really the only true west coast date I love is Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section. (I will always consider Sonny an east coaster)

I do love Ray Brown's in the pocket playing. But the rest of it doesn't tickle me.

I will agree the sound quality is absolutely knock it outta the park good.

Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is also one of my favorites as is Art Pepper + Eleven. It took me forever to restore "Art Pepper - ...The Way It Was!". My version beats the living hell out of the MFSL SACD.

Are you backing up your vinyl 45RPM's?

Not at the moment, but I plan to when I have more free time. I'm also looking for a non delta-sigma ADC that doesn't break the bank, but this quest hasn't been too successful.

I generally can tell if it's a good recording if I have to turn up the volume  ;D
