Vali vs Magni 2 with the HD650
« on: March 24, 2015, 03:52:03 PM »

Ok, so having started with the Wyrd -> Magni 2 -> HD650 (very new, silver drivers), which I like, I decided to try the Vali.

So here's the thing. To my humble ears, I think the Vali does do something nice for the sound. I wouldn't exactly call it warmth, just not as lean as the magni 2, sort of richer, maybe more involving. But it is also definitely less resolving of detail. Sharp edges in the music are a little smoothed over by the Vali. So it doesn't seem like a total win. I suppose at that price point you can't complain.

I'm curious to hear impressions from any others with familiarity with these. Do I have to get a Speedball Crack to up the anty?

Edit:  My dac is the Modi 2

Valhalla 2 is the way to go. I haven't heard the speedball crack but based on impressions that I've read, it will be a much warmer sounding amp than the Schiit stuff. What's your dac?

Its been a while since I heard either but based on my prior experience, I would take the Val2 over the Crack any day. Val 2 gets tonality down for starters and has better bass extension than the Crack, though maybe the Crack is sweeter/more euphonic sounding.

Wow, Valhalla gets a lot of love.

Well, has anyone else up here felt that the Vali was too soft (lacking resolution), at least compared to Magni 2 or other amps?  (I'm using Wyrd + Modi 2 for DAC)?

Vali does take a hit in resolution but also picks up a couple of presentation characteristics that can be nice.  I keep all three stacked on my desk:  Vali/Magni 2/Wyrd.

Haven't heard the top-end offerings from DNA or EC, but the Crack with the HD650 was one of the best headphones pairings I've heard. I have a Vali coming in tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see how it compares with the Crack. I don't have a HD650 anymore though, so it'd only be with the HD800, DT880.

Been listening to the Vali for a day, it's pretty nice piece of gear for the price. You do lose a bit of detail, but it's not a dealbreaker (especially at $120), and you do gain a bit of the "tube wetness" characteristics that people are after. The bass is rounder and the mids are lush with a smoother top end. Even though the highs are smoother on the Vali (compared to like the Magni2) it still does occasionally have issues with hardness in the treble (byproduct of it being hybrid?). In a zombie apocalypse I could live happily with this as my only amp.

Compared to a decked-out Crack (Speedball, TS 5887 ($90), Telefunken 12AU7 ($60)), the Crack does seem to edge it out in terms of detail and speed, and still maintain a lush midrange, impactful bass, "textured" notes. Keep in mind though this will cost you over $520 and you have to build the Crack yourself. A Crack without upgraded tubes (RCA 6AS7G, E-H 12AU7) is more in line with the Vali, but more tubey sounding ("euphonic", thick midrange, round bass) and might even lose out on speed.

Nice thing about the Vali is that it plays nicer with a range of impedances, the Crack being OTL plays best with higher ohm headphones. Overall the Vali is a nice "gateway-amp" into the world of tubes. Captures a small essence of what tubes can offer and makes you wonder how much better it can get.. "down the rabbit hole" ala Lewis Carroll. A great first tube-amp purchase for those curious, but you've been forewarned, this probably won't be your last tube-amp (Spoiler: It can and does get better).

Nice post, thank you for those thoughts.  Your description of the Vali pretty much matches my impression. I do like the touch of "wetness" it imparts.  But with the HD650, somehow I think I don't want to get too, too tubey, since it's already a touch warm/thick.  So yeah, I can see that this won't be my last tube amp.  I guess it's probably the Valhalla 2 next.  I'll have to wait a bit on that.
