Nice post, thank you for those thoughts.  Your description of the Vali pretty much matches my impression. I do like the touch of "wetness" it imparts.  But with the HD650, somehow I think I don't want to get too, too tubey, since it's already a touch warm/thick.  So yeah, I can see that this won't be my last tube amp.  I guess it's probably the Valhalla 2 next.  I'll have to wait a bit on that.

The Crack with speedball and upgraded tubes was a perfect match with my HD650, very fast and energetic sounding amp to tame the "darkness" in the HD650. I haven't heard the Val2 but from descriptions sounds like it approaches what the speedball and upgraded tubes does for the Crack, without the extra cost.

One thing about the vali is that you cant judge it just after turning it on. It sounds much better after about 5 to 10 minutes of warm up, just saying...

Fell asleep after setting it up so when I first listened to it, it had already been on all night

Alright, so here's a question.  Based on my current setup, Wyrd -> Modi 2 -> Vali -> hd650:

If you could only upgrade one of either the DAC (up'ing to the Bifrost) or the amp (up'ing to the Valhalla 2) in the short term, which would it be? Each of those are the same price, $350.

Amp first, or save up the money for whatever the next headphone up would be.

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

I'd go with the V2. Bifrost without usb gen 2 and uber probably won't be a significant upgrade from the modi 2.

Yeah, I think I will get a Valhalla 2 sometime in the near future.

What are people's opinion on burn-in for the Vali?  Is there such a thing?  Does it improve?

FWIW, I am in total love with this setup paired with my hd650.

Some stuff benefits from burn-in, some stuff not. I usually just burn-in everything I have to be safe. Almost always let my gear warm up for a bit before listening.
