Found my way out of my lurking cave (hopefully)  ahoy ...

Really wanted to remove the metal mesh thats behind the magnet and took some measurements in the process.

Kinda fucked up my coupler (like just a few hours ago) and Im pretty tired so these measurements aren't accurate at all.

This is stock without the senn liner. I kept the anax foam trapezoid thing in place since I didnt really want to remove it just to put it back in 10 mins later.
I always get funky dips (or much worse looking peaks) between 6 and 10 khz depending on the materials I use.

This is without the metal ring driver baffle (didnt bother to put the screws back in for the measurement but I dont think it should matter too much).
Pushed the cup against the coupler, mightve used too much force.
Id say it does what youd expect. No voodoo magic. Its in there for a reason. The last time I listened to my HD 800 without it was like a year ago so I cant comment on the sound but afaik I didnt like it.

Might redo these measurements (doubt Ill unscrew the ring again tho) when I fix my coupler. Ran out of foam so itll take some time.

I've had the same experience with that headphone, they can be really boring and harsh or incredible and engaging depending on what upstream gear you use.

I also think they change their sound with upstream components but I couldn't find the right equipment which makes them engaging. Maybe it's like searching for a unicorn? :D

So awesome. I'm really curious to see what can be done with the HD800 driver. I've always been impressed by the 800s, but they never really felt engaging enough; I would definitely wind up modding them if I ever owned a pair.

For me the trick was using a 40 ohm Impedance adapter, put it right over the edge so to say. Takes away some of the distracting grain while still having more then enough texture, i can listen for hours now without fatigue whereas before that was not possible without eq.

A friend of mine just did the same thing : A 22 ohm resistor before the Heaphone output of its DIY Solid State amp. Job done and he's happy.  he tested 12, 22, 41, 100 Ohms and finaly he choose the 22 Ohms.

Hmm i haven't tried lower then 40 yet, might be worth a shot for when i get bored. So far i went all the way up to 120ohm which was interesting. But it's hard to do a proper ab when you have to keep modifying the same adapter :)

If I understood correctly. he unsoldered the + of each channel ( L and R) and put the different resistors temporarily so he was able to test quickly with or without the resistor.

I'm not into DIY myself, so my explanations are maybe wrong.
