HD800 DRIVER REMOVAL PART 2

1. Remove metal mesh (the driver's magnet will tend to keep it in place)
2. Push down on the driver.
3. Push forward so the terminals section dislodges from the basket.

Cut wires (not pictured)

RAW HD800 MEASUREMENTS

Driver is resting on top to the measurement rig. ~1mm

Top: Simulated free-air / sponge.
Bottom: Simulated pinna against skin/bone / solid-plate

There is some serious potential for this driver... for either a closed or open headphone where the drivers are held closer to the ear.

I would be otherwise kinder to that SAA fucker, but I can't because of this paragraph on his website:

Stefan AudioArt’s headphone modifications are based on James Serdechny 35 years of experience as an engineer and musician. By removing or replacing key parts of the assembly of the HD800 headphones the issue of vibration control is properly address and the result is a headphone which performs at a significantly higher level. Every headphone mod we’ve come across on the market has been created by DIY individuals who operate on misguided notions. Their approach to adding materials to a headphone comes from their lack of knowledge of headphone design and the result yields degradation in the performance of the headphone which can be easily heard in a headphone system setup with properly designed cables and vibration control.

I mean, what a fucking asshole. $379... But then again, this is what most cable and mod guys do ... spew BS. What I'm doing here is definitely showing that the Anax mod was not based on misguided notions. Stefan AudioArt’s headphone modifications are based on ripping you off. I'll show you guys in the next post.

That's really pretentious bullshit, even for a boutique manufacturer...

Holy shit, you weren't kidding about the HD800 drivers sounding better than HD800 in a PortaPro kind of format/housing.

The drivers may be fantastic in a Paradox Slant or Sony MA100 type of arrangement. That way, some of the staging qualities can be maintained.

So awesome. I'm really curious to see what can be done with the HD800 driver. I've always been impressed by the 800s, but they never really felt engaging enough; I would definitely wind up modding them if I ever owned a pair.

That's an upstream problem on your end, not a driver or acoustic problem. So unless you alter that, no mods will change that perception.

I've had the same experience with that headphone, they can be really boring and harsh or incredible and engaging depending on what upstream gear you use.
