Wow... a -30dB drop at all low frequencies? That's kinda extreme, I think.

So is a less extreme version of this potentially what would happen if the seal is broken?

Probably just a slightly roll-off in the lower bass. I forgot to put in the hair simulator. The above #1 measurement assumes a very tight seal on a head without hair.

One thing we can assume about the driver is that is is very low Q = strong magnet / awesome control. The downside to low Q drivers is poor bass extension without help (needs a huge volume to extend low). This makes sense and is consistent with the HD800 design and our experiences with it. The HD800 does tend toward a drier sound.

No, it's just the V2 solid-plate measurements. The peak goes away with the sponge or free air measurement.

See attached. Here is the V1 type measurement using the sponge "plate". It's like what Jude says: "different measurement rigs, different results." No shit sherlock! Been saying that since the beginning of time. Don't know what Jude's point is. He seems confused.

Anyways, here it is with sponge or simulated free-air (mesh removed from basket):

I think there might be some sort of interaction between the solid-plate skin/bone simulator and the huge size of the driver that causes such a sharp peak in the prior type measurements.

Are you gonna do something similar to the SAA mod?

I would be otherwise kinder to that SAA fucker, but I can't because of this paragraph on his website:

Stefan AudioArt’s headphone modifications are based on James Serdechny 35 years of experience as an engineer and musician. By removing or replacing key parts of the assembly of the HD800 headphones the issue of vibration control is properly address and the result is a headphone which performs at a significantly higher level. Every headphone mod we’ve come across on the market has been created by DIY individuals who operate on misguided notions. Their approach to adding materials to a headphone comes from their lack of knowledge of headphone design and the result yields degradation in the performance of the headphone which can be easily heard in a headphone system setup with properly designed cables and vibration control.

I mean, what a fucking asshole. $379... But then again, this is what most cable and mod guys do ... spew BS. What I'm doing here is definitely showing that the Anax mod was not based on misguided notions. Stefan AudioArt’s headphone modifications are based on ripping you off. I'll show you guys in the next post.

HD800 DRIVER REMOVAL PART 1

Four torx screws. You guys can figure it out. Note second picture from the bottom. Looks like the SAA mod huh? Yeah, SAA guy removes the metal ring and puts plastic washers under the screws to hold the driver down. Plus he solders the cable directly to the driver terms. For the low low price of $379.
