Recently bought a Schiit Modi 2 Über DAC for my bedroom/office system for listening to my Schiit Valhalla 2 headphone amp when working at the Retina iMac for my photography. i've been very happy with this pairing; the Sennheiser HD600s are one of the great transducers in the history of audio-dom, IMO.

It occured me to tonight I hadn't listened to this lttle $149 DAC in my main system, so tonight I patched it into the system along with the $99 Schiit Wyrd USB decrapifier in place of my reference Schiit Gungnir DAC.

Fired up the Conrad-Johnson CT-5 preamp and LP70S, warmed up the Dynaudio Contour S3.4 loudspeakers, and put on some 24/96 and 24/192 high-res content from the Mac Mini steaming to Audirvana.

Holy Schiit!!!

This pairing sounds REALLY, REALLY good.  Notably better than my $1200 Wadia 121 and my non-Uber'd original Bifrost. The Modi2 Über is natural, neutral, clean, fast yet beautifully detailed and musical at the same time. Subtle instrumental shadings and nuances are wonderfully reproduced. Not a hint of stridency or sibilance on the top end, and real weight and body in the bass. The mids are gorgeous; female vocals are astonishingly good. Also very impressive is the airy and spacious imaging, "hall ambience", soundstaging. it's all there.

This little dynamic duo, at $248, can blow your socks off.

Wow. Just wow.

Thanks for the impression, my feeling towards Wyrd in Geek Pulse is somewhat mixed, I'll try AB again once I get my hands on my coming Rag.
Cheers.

Haven't heard the Geek Pulse, but I'm not particularly enamored of my Geek Out 450; it sounds good, but it's a bit cold and analytical.  Regarding the Geek Out 450, I actually prefer my Audioquest Dragonfly for a USB dongle-style DAC. Even though it is limited to 24/96 playback, it is considerably more musical than the GO450. Gordon Rankin knows a thing or two about USB DACs. The Modi 2 Uber and Wyrd blow those two out of the water, though.

The Wyrd makes a notable and reproducible improvement with both my Gungnir and Modi2 Uber.

Really surprised you prefer the Dragonfly. The GO450 has to be one of the best mini DACs I have ever heard. It's definitely up to studio level IMHO. Might be the synergy but even connected to my current amp, it's amazing the quality a very affordable rig can put out these days.

Well, we all have different preferences and sensibilities, I guess. Makes the world more interesting! ;) I find the Dragonfly to be richer, fuller, more layered and textured than the GO450. I think the GO sounds quite good, but I prefer the Dragonfly. I have a thing for Gordon's DACs, though. I heard his Wavelength Crimson USB DAC with the $12,000 silver wire transformer upgrade, and it was one of the finest-sounding DACs I've ever heard (along with the Playback Designs and Bricasti M1).

I agree 100% with you, though, on the quality an affordable righ can put out these days, hence this post about the Modi2 Uber/Wyrd combo.

As a DAC? No way. Your Dragonfly must sound nothing like the original Dragonfly which was utter shit. The ODAC destroyed that and the 450 destroys the ODAC. Try running your 450 continuously for a few days and then go back to it. I and others have heard what you describe with new and cold units.

LFF has heard my rig with the 450 and we concur with each other. Could be something up with your synergy or something else.

We're getitng off-topic here, but I'm referring to the Dragonfly v1.2, not the original Dragonfly.

Well  I have to hear one then someday because the original did not bode well for Rankin's so called USB expertise at all.

Alright, the more I read about it, I'm going to try to get a 1.2 to A/B with the 450. The changes seem significant if real. The original hype on that product was completely underserved, we'll see. OT rant over, carry on folks.

I just swapped my Gungnir back into the system, and Gungnir adds notably more weight, solidity, and bass output and definition to the presentation. The considerably beefier power supply no doubt helps that to no small degree.

What was surprising was just how good the little Modi2 Uber was, though. Truly impressive.
