Anax: i never heard of anyone who actually got fined for not flushing here.
Thad, you're right that announcements on the metro are in various languages in my country. Of those 4 languages (English, mandarin, Malay, Tamil) it can be argued that Malay is the original language of the island--chinese and Indians and definitely Europeans only came to Singapore later, due to sea trade.

I figure no one knows Hokkien / fujianhua anymore in Singapore, except for the grandparents? Pretty much English and Mandarin now?

Nyet. The dialects are alive and well, at least among the parents' generation--people in their 40's and 50's are still conversant in Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew. The other dialects aren't as well represented, but they're there.
Just last week I was speaking to an 18-year-old who hopes to study physiotherapy, and because of that, she wants to pick up some Chinese dialects to better converse with older clients. How cool is that?

Friends of mine have been fined chewing gum in public. I wouldn't doubt the loitering one. Singaporeans are as OCD as it gets.

Loitering? I thought we were talking about toilet-ing.

Also, I thought the ban on chewing gum (lit. the act of chewing the gum) is perfectly legal since 2004? When were those friends fined?
