Sudden loss of volume in my power amp
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:07:20 AM »

Mates: Need help on this one. My set up rig is my Mac Air to the Gungnir , the Parasound P3 preamp and to my Odyssey Stratos Extreme power amp.

I was using my floor speakers/HE 6 directly connected to the speaker taps of the Stratos and all was fine. Last week, I got adventurous and inserted the Hifiman speaker adapter box between the amp and the headphone. That also worked fine for a week.

Yesterday, I switched on the rig and found virtually no sound coming from the HP/speakers at the usual listening lives. I disconnected the Hifiman box and connected directly to the speaker taps. I find that almost double the usual listening levels (i.e. position of the preamp volume pot), I am getting close to the original sound levels.

Any thoughts as to why this could happen? I tried my Burson Soloist preamp instead of the Parasound but the same thing happened. Previously I had the Burson at the 8 pm level (volume pot). That's now become 12 pm.

Thanks

Have you checked all of the digital volume control settings?

I remember all of a sudden having a BIG drop in output, and found it to be a digital slider in s/w getting changed…
(be sure and check your midi setup too)

Just a thought.

I am using Amarra. The sliders on it and iTunes are in their usual "max" positions.

What is amarra? Is that like a player?

You can try swapping cables if have any spare.  It could of gotten kink or something out of no where or whatever from moving stuff, hooking and unhooking. I don't think it's your amp.

Can try other sources too maybe like use phone or something hooked to your amp to test out as well.

Rex,
Amarra is a player for the Mac like JRiver (i suppose). It works with iTunes. I checked the software out by using my Gungnir with my headphone amps and its all good.

I removed my RCA cables and connected XLR cables (I have balanced inputs into the amp as well). Still the same issue. The bigger problem is that the amp weighs over 60 pounds and while under warranty, I need to ship it from India to Indiana !!

So as far as you can tell there is no change in SQ, just the volume?

hmmmm…

This is a long shot but did you check "Audio MIDI Setup" (in Utilities) as well?
It has some 'buried' volume controls for different inputs and outputs.

I cannot fathom how an amp would suddenly lose 1/2 its output and still be otherwise normal. My first thought was that it was a balanced amp and the adapter box shorted the negative channel and took it out - balanced amp only driving a positive leg = 1/2 power.  But the amp is single ended , the balanced inputs are shorted at the input to single ended , so connectors are merely there for convenience but no benefit driving this amp from a balanced source.

It might be a good test to remove the amp out of the normal rig and test it independently but I agree with most of the considerations that this is some sort of digital volume limiting issue.

dB....

I tried using RCA cables to go from the SE outs of the preamp to the SE ins of the Stratos...same result. I am planning to take it to an electronics store that a friend of mine owns to do an independent test.

JJ, let me check the Audi Midi once again and revert...

Uncola, what does rebiasing involve?

Thanks guys.

I agree with the rest, one tends first of all  rather thinks of some simple cause for this. You have not forgotten to turn the power amp on? Well that may be too simple. But turn it off, have a good sleep (or go to work or smth) and have fresh look at it the next day.
