So interesting.

The Beyer treble never bothered me for a second.

The eventual reason I sold them is because I found them to sound very flat relative to HFM headphones.  But, the metallic sound is not something that ever came across to me.  Grainy, sure.  Metallic, not so much.

When I first got into this hobby, I really wanted it to be objective and clear-cut.  Now, though, I really appreciate the subjectivity of it all.

It really is bizarre, from reading around the internet there are a few people that for whatever reason find the DT treble un-listenable. Hard to understand though, is the timbre of the treble notes slightly different between the various manufacturers or is it perhaps the way the drivers project the sound into the ear that may irritate some ears?

In other news as luck would have it it looks like I may have found a swap for some HD600's!  :)p7

How does the treble signature and sound in general on the HD600 compare to the DT880?
Have had many people recommend them since I have had the issue with the 880's, as being the obvious choice if I am struggling with the Beyer treble.

The HD600 does not have a treble peak.
It is (one of) the most neutral headphones around.
If you liked the DT880 except for the treble you will love this one.

I never cared for the DT770 and liked the DT880 but only for specific types of music.
Loved my (old) DT990 for many years, love the comfort.
The highs never bothered me but do find them a bit harsh on some recordings.

Use your ears to enjoy music, not as an analyser.

Got the HD-600s!
Sound great thus far, trebles noticeably tamer/more realistic in my books :)p12

Be careful if you get DT880's and have susceptibility to tinnitus.

Still can't can't wrap my head around my experience with the DT880, I have permanently amplified tinnitus(high pitched cicada type ringing) from using them. Learning to cope with it, hopefully it will diminish with time, I am laying off listening to music for a few weeks, its going to be hard. The volumes I played them at were definitely not overly loud but for some reason the way the DT880 enunciates the trebles over reached my ears capacity. Can an individuals unique physiology make them more sensitive too certain frequency bands than others?

I have been wondering in addition if perhaps the DT880 250 ohm are rather sensitive to the amping and the trebles become more prominent with some output devices? The experience I had was it appeared that the trebles sounded significantly/abnormally louder than the rest of the sound spectrum.

On that note does anyone have any advice dealing with tinnitus?

There's nothing you can do with tinitus other then learning to live with it :( However if you have a cold coupled with listening fatigue it can give tinitus like symptons in my experience.

I would really keep an eye on your listening volume though, i suspect you tried to "toughen in out" trying to live with the treble. Which atleast gave you some listening fatigue, like you said give your ears some rest and try to be more sensible in the future.

I did try to "toughen up" and live with the treble, it felt wrong from the get go but I suppose I had some ridiculous hope I would get used to them.

This experience has been a big wake up call, don't take anything for granted, the idea of losing the amazing experience of enjoying music is very sobering. If something feels wrong listen to your body, no matter what and if any thing slacken right off and take it very slowly moving forward. Its taught me that you need to ease into new things so that you can acclimatize to them and be objective with the experience.
