I find my one-sided HE 4 to be on the leaner side.

The newer versions are. The original white driver version isn't so much.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

The biggest theoretical "weakness" of a push-pull design, to my understanding, is that the magnet assembly creates a cavity that can cause resonance issues. It also creates a barrier between the membrane and the ear. Something like the Audez'e Fazor is designed to correct this, while a single sided planar avoids it by design.

That is true, the question maybe what's more sound degrading/audible ... issues with the 'blockage' between the membrane and ear abd or wavefront issues or linearity ?

The HE1000 has a more open structure and a magnetic field,
It may be a better compromise than the small holes of a symmetric driver or the non-linearity of the single magnet driver.
Dunno.... the aswer.

The fazor only 'solves' the wavefront problem at certain parts of the frequency band though.
The blockage and relative small holes are still there and so are the cavities.

I never heard most of these models (only a few of them) so really can't say much about it sonically in a general sense.

What is considered the best sounding HE ?
Does this have the lowest distortion and is symmetrical or is it the HE560 ?

Acc to Tyll's plots the THD of the HE-6 is about the same (in average value) but the HE560 isn't as 'constant'. (100dB SPL)
Perhaps the excursions of the membrane are relatively small compared to the membrane stator distance and non-linearity isn't a practical issue that much. (just guessing)

Anyway, Perhaps the next 'driver type' has small magnets on both sides of the driver, more open and symmetrical but lower efficiency perhaps and a higher pricetag yet again.

I hope that chrome finish on the cups isn't some kind of coating, but rather actual metal.

The hinge assembly looks like it could be heavy...

Why do I get the feeling that it's a much bigger headphone than the photos imply?

Maybe because you saw it engulf a woman's head.

I don't see why they aren't reusing the headband assembly used in HE400i and HE560. Those cups though. Look about the same size as HE-Jade cups, which fitted very well when I tried them.

I'd speculate that one-sided orthos tend to image better. More coherent, easier to listen to. Independent of tone that is.

Audezes fazors (essentially a waveguide) attempt to address the issue but seem to fall short. Or maybe they're running into other issues

Very tasteful and expensive looking modern retro design. The only thing that throws me off a bit is a squarish top of a headband.

I can almost guarantee you it's not. You can see the Made in China toy chrome layer that will flake off and looks uneven. You know that 'wood' will end up just like the cheap veneer like the 560. All $$$ in the pocket.

Btw, chrome is an uneven finish even when made correctly. There are other finishes that would work and look better. Look to firearms. Polished/satin nickel or ferritic nitride coat and case hardening for black finishes. He should just use stainless and buff it.

Is that "grain" I see on the Chrome finish!? Will it bring more textures to the sound?

Maybe because you saw it engulf a woman's head.

That might very well be the case. Also I keep thinking the headband construction is like that on the HE-560... minus the fact that this one is silver.
