Watched the first two episodes of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell this morning. Liked it. It focuses on Mr. Norrell, one of the last true magicians left in England (takes place when they're still fighting the French and wearing fuzzy wigs), who decides he wants to use his powers for the good of the nation and to bring respectability back to his craft.

*minor spoilers*

He's also an anti-social neurotic who almost literally makes a Faustian pact at the start to accomplish it- ends justifying the means sort. There's also a prophecy, a villain, and Strange, who after discovering he's a natural at magic, apprentices himself to Norrell. Though as the story progresses, it's becoming less clear to Strange whether they're meant to be fighting on the same side...

Finally started Better Call Saul. Two episodes in- it's depressingly good.
Agreed. It took me just until the end of the second episode to get hooked. It may end up being nearly as good as BB. So that's pretty much all I've been watching. Waiting for Masters of Sex to begin again, as it's also one of my favourite shows. I don't watch too many... Hard to pry away from the music.

Anyone watching 'Making of the Mob: New York'? No wonder The Godfather was so good. Coppola did his due diligence with historical research and accuracy.

What channel is it showing on? The Godfather is in my top 5 movies of all time.

AMC. It's like the History Channel narrative/docudramas but with better actors, budget and director. If you have a DVR, you might try to record or download the first two episodes.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Thanks for posting this.  I know the book but had no idea a series had been developed.  Look forward to checking it out.

Re alternative histories based on books, I finally got around to watching the pilot of The Man in the High Castle.  Great!  Can't wait to see more.

Can stream that for free from Amazon:

That reminds me- I was reading a thing and the book The Difference Engine came up- apparently it's like good but not good and hard but good.

Last night I watched the first episode of True Detective season 2... not as captivating as the first season with Woody and Matthew but it was good enough as an initial "set-up" piece. I hate Collin Farrell or whatever his name is, but he looks menacing here, it might be a good piece for him. But thing is, EVERYONE looks menacing, even the lovable Vince Vaughn lol!

Also watched the first episode of The Brink. Robbins was very funny and Jack Black is Jack Black. Can't wait for more.

Yeah, it's Vince Vaughn that I'm not so sure about.  I'll give it some time.
