Thanks for the impressions, Marv! Since you mentioned it, I do believe the SFD-1 Mk2 uses 8x oversampling via the PMD100.

This particular thought caught my attention: " It could probably be accurate to say that the M7 brought up the volume level of the microdetails or perhaps accentuated it with a certain sharpness."

That's something I noticed on the NOS1704 as well at times, though I know it's a different design (same chips) than the M7.

Haven't heard this stuff yet, but there might be something to that PMD100.

The PCM63 and PCM1702 recommended a DF1700P (16-bit in). For the PCM1704 apparently there was the DF1706 (16/20/24-bit in) companion 8x interpolator.

Looking at the PMD100 there are quite a few controls besides the interpolators: de-emphasis, dither, attenuator...

The SFD-1mk1 had the NPC 5803 filter chip. The mk2 had the Pacific Microsonics PMD100 with HDCD. I think I have maybe one or two HDCD CDs. Anyways, a lot of people preferred the PMD100 chip.

If you guys recall, Audio-GD was making a limited run of PCM1704 based DACs with the PMD100 chips, up to a certain point where he stopped making them unless you supplied your own PMD100 chip. To this day, some people swear by the PCM100 digital filter, not for the HDCD, but for its sound. Personally, I have no idea.

What's the digital filter chip in Hans' AGD NOS1704?
