Is the Stax SR-507 the poor man's SR-009?
« on: September 01, 2014, 01:54:55 PM »

I listened to the Stax SR-009 and I'm in love. It has the perfect frequency response and soundstage that I desire.

I don't have the funds for the SR-009 yet so I'm thinking of buying the SR-507. I read that the Stax SR-507 is like the SR-009 but with less details and finesse, like a poor man's SR-009. Would you guys agree?

SR-507 doesn't sound liek SR-009. SR-507 is mid-bassy and sizzly.

The closest I've gotten to a SR009 that isn't a SR009 is a HE6 with top-quality preamp+amping in terms of resolution. Tonality is a little darker on the HE6, 009 is definitely brighter, and both HE6 and 009 have etch to my ears.

The 507 doesn't sound like the 009.

With the x07 revision of Lambdas the changes to the mounting resulted in there being more reinforcement in the bass area. Whereas earlier Lambdas were relatively timid, the x07s have a hump which helps reinforce a sense of impact that stats usually lack. The forward mids and peaky treble are common the design. If you're OK with these compromises then the x07s are a good choice, but they're not as tonally smooth as the 009s. The HE6s bug me with that treble harshness. If you'd like a smoother tonality then there's the laid-back 007s, or the KOSS ESP950s. I've also heard the Kingsounds sound pretty good, like a more forgiving Lambda, but that was a modded pair.

I'd assume what Zowki wants to do is stick with electrostatic headphones so he can get a good amplifier ahead of the 009, correct? I've only heard the 009 twice, once on a DIY KGSSHV and in another room at a meet with a Eddie Current Electra, and none of my friends nor I really liked the 009 with the KGSSHV. May have been the giant OPPO DAC/BD player screwing things up, I don't know. I can only speak from my experience, but my favorite stax lambda I've heard (out of the SR-lambda SB, Lambda nova, lambda nova signature, SR-202, SR-207, SR-404 and Airbow SR-507) would be my personal setup, the SR-202 with SR-507 pads. It lacks the absolute transparency and detail retrieval of the 009, but it doesn't sound harsh like all the other lambdas I've heard. Of course that's just my own shitty opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Vegan pads remove the treble harshness on HE-6 IMO anetode, they even give me a similar impression that the 009 did in my very brief sampling of it if I EQ out some 200hz.. Not that I would pick them over the other mentioned headphones when looking for the 009 sound

The vegan pads could perhaps mitigate that troublesome harshness, but they could never quench my irrational hatred of the HE6.

I wouldn't think to recommend the HE-6 either.  I've never considered it a detailed headphone and the treble hurts my ears.  No idea what pads were on the pairs I heard.

There really aren't many choices for what you're looking for off the top of my head.  The ESP950 has a nice FR but the presentation is still different from most Stax.  The Paradox has a pretty similar tonality but isn't as resolving as Stax.  I think the best choice might be a vintage Stax LNS.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I don't mind getting a non-electrostatic headphone so now I'm deciding between the Stax SR-202 and Hifiman HE6. I used to own a Paradox and really liked it but I would prefer an open headphone for the soundstage.

Consider the 207 instead of the 202. Or just keep an eye out for used Lambdas on the market, they pop up fairly regularly.
