One of the secrets of the unveiled LCD-3s.
« on: March 12, 2012, 04:52:02 AM »

FYI, Alex dropped off my 3rd pair, and this one is good too. Slightly different from the SUPER 2nd pair in that this one has slightly more bass. Actually not a big deal and probably preferable. The 2nd was very mid-centric, and honestly I could go with either one.

This 3rd pair is just as super as the 2nd one. Punchy bass, better articulation and clarity than HD800 across the board during a direct comparison. Still the Audeze house sound, just so you guys know. The technical merits of the 'phone transcend its FR.

So what may have Audeze done to remove the veil?

But what I did find was that they replaced the felt with a nice low-medium density foam sheet of between 1-2mm. ;D

The rextangular felt against the driver or the circular felt against the grill?

Circular.

They should have hired you to tune them.

But really, I just had to chuckle when I saw they replaced the material. I only noted because I have the lights turned on low and I saw a glimmery reflection off the foam - felt does not reflect light like this. Would have been funny if they used TP.

Is there a typo in your first post?  So they replaced the felt with foam instead?  And left the fleece jacket type material on the driver?

I believe I tried foam in your LCD-3 I think.  I'm suspicious there was a driver change as well, but who knows.  It's all so mysterious.  Driver failures, pad differences, damping changes.  They fix the driver failures supposedly and you get a better sounding pair but the driver still fails.  WTF hard to make sense out of all of that...

Yes, they replaced those felt circles with foam which was a little bit thicker. I'm sure there were driver changes too given the failures and other inconsistencies.

So the 3rd pair has different dampening material at the back of the driver, what about the foam at the front?

Did you check out the ones on the 2nd pair?

The front is still the same see through foam (on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd)

I don't know about the 2nd pair since I had it less than 48 hours, but I suspect that one had the foam (instead of felt) as well. I only noticed because of the way a single light blub was on shining on the 3rd pair. Foam reflects light in a certain way, whereas felt just absorbs it.

I'll take some pix.
