Hi all. thought I would chip in here. Whit knows that I can't leave anything alone , mostly out of curiosity. I was one of the lucky people who got a non-veiled LCD3 ( at least I believe this to be true ) , but knowing that no mass produced item can be tailored to my specific needs, I felt it necessary to tear the thing down and start from scratch. The biggest surprise initially was the stock damping. This is a heat sealed (edges) square of fleece. I think the foam discs are more aesthetic and acoustically transparent as there is no audible change with it in place and not. ( again to my ears )

The surprising thing for me was how good my pair sounded without any damping ( when compared to vintage options similarly undamped ). I have tried a few various damping schemes and each has it's own merit. The one I most enjoy with a wide selection of music is similar to what Fang did with the HE5LE , damped the perimeter but left the center open. ( except fang applied this to the front of the driver because of the peaky attributes of the HE5 )

I was one of those folk who having compared the O2 - BHSE with the LCD3 decided that it really did not justify the equipment change for me.

Off topic, currently been focusing on the K1000 and although it found little love initially, it really grows on you. Is it too out there in terms of design to measure ?

Interesting. So you got your LCD3s with a foam disc instead of a felt disc? My first one "veiled" one was felt - which required the addition of TP to flatten out the stock FR (too much bass). Could be possible changes in driver characteristics... My first LCD3 without the felt was crazy bassy.

Actually the K1000 is measurable. Just me putting the mic on a triprod and suspending the drivers. I would have to rig up something, but it would be more along the lines of my measurement systems intended use (speakers)

yes, mine came with foam and must have been one of the first ones off the line as it was one of the initial 3 to be let into the wild. The damping on the 3 is very different from the material ( felt ) used on the 2. The 1 used glass fibre ..dB

not much before that. you do know that I am now going to have to open mine again to confirm this. I could swear it is think open cell foam but I have had too many other headphones pass through the cave to be absolute..dB

Well, at least the good thing is that we can play with our LCD3s and mod them to our own tastes. I'm not familiar with ortho-modding, but there's plenty of expertise here with LFF and RD to help me. And I'm not afraid of taking things apart either.
