Hi all. thought I would chip in here. Whit knows that I can't leave anything alone , mostly out of curiosity. I was one of the lucky people who got a non-veiled LCD3 ( at least I believe this to be true ) , but knowing that no mass produced item can be tailored to my specific needs, I felt it necessary to tear the thing down and start from scratch. The biggest surprise initially was the stock damping. This is a heat sealed (edges) square of fleece. I think the foam discs are more aesthetic and acoustically transparent as there is no audible change with it in place and not. ( again to my ears )
The surprising thing for me was how good my pair sounded without any damping ( when compared to vintage options similarly undamped ). I have tried a few various damping schemes and each has it's own merit. The one I most enjoy with a wide selection of music is similar to what Fang did with the HE5LE , damped the perimeter but left the center open. ( except fang applied this to the front of the driver because of the peaky attributes of the HE5 )
I was one of those folk who having compared the O2 - BHSE with the LCD3 decided that it really did not justify the equipment change for me.
Off topic, currently been focusing on the K1000 and although it found little love initially, it really grows on you. Is it too out there in terms of design to measure ?
