Unlike the previous iBuds, where you'd not get any/much bass, unless you pushed them against your ears (in my case, anyway), in which case they'd deliver pretty decent SQ, the current model (Earpods) deliver very decent linear bass if you just let them sit naturally in your ears (low-end extension isn't great, but bass, overall, is more than decent). The Earpods are, in that sense, a little more in-ears than standard earbuds as part of the housing does go inside the ear-canal.

Two other aspects I haven't mentioned are a) the strain reliefs (on the housings, remote and plug) have proved to be very reliable after all this time, and very tastefully understated, and b) the chin slider is one that actually works (like the very first day, after all this time) unlike those found on soooo many other phones.

Like I said, Apple really did their homework with these phones.

  • I consider myself "normal"

I'm wondering if one can go out and run with these w/o the "occlusion effect" messing things up.

No occlusion effect / bone conduction whatsoever. The shallower the fit, the less bone conduction you normally get (except for the ER4S, perhaps because they require an even deeper insertion depth than customs).

Bone conduction is one of the downsides of custom IEMs, an aspect that is hardly ever mentioned—or completely ignored and/or overlooked—when discussing customs.

After accepting $3 billion from Apple, Beats co-founder says EarPods are awful  "He inevitably got asked about the EarPods, which he described as awful, and went on to say “You listen to ‘Apocalypse Now’ and a helicopter sounds like a mosquito.”  (geek.com)

Leaving the "why did Apple buy Beats" question aside (I think most here know it wasn't to buy the secret sauce they use in their headphones), I'm curious to know what Iovine listens to at home.  I assume the CEO of Taco Bell doesn't eat that stuff all the time.  But such criticism coming from the guy who made the Beats Solo is pretty funny.  Maybe it was just his way of getting the message across that things are going to change at Apple, for better or for worse.  I think Apple could probably use a bit of a shake-up/ awakening.

(Another article on this.)

^   That's funny, my Earpods make a mosquito sound like a helicopter. Perhaps my pair, purchased 21 months ago, was an early prototype of what would, two years later, be known as the Earpods BBBeats Edition.

I like the fit of the new ones, but the sound of the old ones.  The ones that I heard were when they first came out and the person that I borrowed them from had not listened to them at all.

^   Mine were purchased separately (£24.99) soon after they came out in September 2012. At first I found the fit/form factor a bit strange and attempted to sit them in my ears like ordinary earbuds. Later I realised part of the housing has to go inside the ear — this makes a huge difference. (wonder if you wore them right at the time)

I think they are very nice as included accessory, definitely not poo. But I would not recommend them as separate purchase, there are better options

...there are better options
Something open-ish (non-IEM) for under $29USD?  I'm curious... any suggestions?

Not exactly 29  Dollars mind you and sometimes it depends on the available vendors:
Koss Portapro
Sennheiser PX90
Koss KSC35
Koss KSC75
Philips headphones (too many to mention)

I would go for a PX200 II and call it a day. The PX200 II is great value for money and still sounds open for a semi-closed design. I think the options here are just the tip of the iceberg.
