I had issues with the Dirac app as it made the Earpods sound rather bassy and the whole thing sounded rather compressed, too...and treble became somewhat grainy. At first it sounded more 'exciting' but within minutes I simply couldn't take it. I preferred the more 'raw' sounding Earpods in their stock sonic form.

I tried to listen to them a few times, but they refused to stay in my ears more than about 5 seconds. I choose to consider that a sign from on high.

  • Does more good lurking than not

I bought the little $10 ear skins for them b/c they easily fall out of my ears. The skins let me keep a loose seal to minimize the bass quantity. They are very enjoyable.

Never knew this is a thing. I had no fit problem when using mine in bed or at my desk, or when walking about either. But I have always been thinking of buying some sugru (an amazing putty thing) to make a seal/more friction.

If the Earpods "refused to stay in [your] ears more than 5 seconds", perhaps they didn't like Mr brcmrgn that much?  :)

EDIT: Seems I've quickly gone from "+2/-5" to "+2/-7" — looks like I'm becoming more popular by the minute!

I think the earpod shape fit me better than their old ones. The old ones were just painful to fit in your ear without the foams, and the foams themselves disintegrated in no time. At least the earpods let me move my head without them falling out.

I find the fit a bit difficult too. I can get them to lodge in my ears very loosely, but I prefer the sound if I push them in further, but the pods just won't stay there and eventually come loose again.

In that respect, I find the 2nd Generation easier to keep in my ears!!

I think I might have liked the prior version better than the EarPods. The EarPods do have better bass and less distortion, but they're too strong in the low treble region, making them fatiguing. The last version "earbuds" were smoother. Unfortunately mine fell apart and nobody seems to have the old ones available.

They are very sensitive to where you get a fit, which imo can make or break their sound. The second gen version seems less touchy in that respect. Go from the pods to a decent iem though and they show their true colours, but I guess for the money, they're ok.

buds with fit issues and buds with bass
« Reply #28 on: April 15, 2014, 08:54:51 PM »

The first gen for me needed the foamies all the time but then they stayed put well for me and weren't quick to hurt. The only others I have experience with aren't legit. They're knockoffs of the 2nd gen and my wife (who could frankly care less about music quality) could use them at the gym without them falling out. They looked like they were run through the same molds as the Apple gear, so I assume fit is the same as gen 2 Apple buds. They sounded like some Sony buds, so nothing special, but good 'nuff for my wife to listen to her TV shows while on the machines.

The latest buds, I've not heard but have been told they actually have bass. The only other buds I know of that have bass are a coworkers AKG K311 buds. They are so huge they barely fit in the ear but they had more bass than any other buds I've ever come across, music actually sounded full and normal. I'd like to see how they compare to Apple's gen 3, but then again, the K311 isn't in production anymore so it probably isn't too relevant.

Yes, I seem to have quite the history with AKG products, in case you've not noticed.

The previous series of ear buds did not sound bad. Are the new designs a big improvement?
