I think the power supply is only happening on the Levi if it actually sound better. Sounds like that's TBD and might not materialize. The major differences for the Levi are the trannies and the pot. If the trannies end up being the cinemags and we're within a finger's breadth of the 445, it'll rock for sure.

I'd consider how sensitive your speakers are before making the decision regarding the amps. A few wpc is a ton of headroom and the moth drivers that Marvey is using are crazy sensitive.

Could you use an 845 tube but run at low voltage. I was once told you can run these at about 40v?

845 is a completely different tube from 45. Very very different. 10V filament to 2.5V filament. ~1000 plate voltage vs. ~275. 5.3 gain vs. 3.5.

For headphones, the 445 Production > 2A3mk4 > 445 DA. Anax may have preferred the 445 DA over the 2A3mk4, but I don't think he had a chance to really tube roll with the mk4 yet.

The 2A3mk4 with the EML solid plate 2A3s was excellent with the OB speakers. I haven't heard the 445 yet on speakers, but it is my intention to run them on speakers. The 2A3mk4 will have twice the power as the 445. That's 3db. Not a big difference with high-efficiency speakers. I just want the 45 sound as Staps described above.

Thank you for correcting me, Marvey.  The comments on the 445 production make the Levi more inscrutable for me. Aftet all,  'God' means unreachable in a sense. I' curious what will happen when the Levi production face to face with  God.

I do wish I was in both build lists of 445 and Levi, Not only the Levi, but I cann't afford both, so I choose the Levi as an end game gear.

Hope the first batch is not the last batch, God Almighty.

Does anyone know what Craig is charging for the production version of the 445?  Also, if everyone seems to agree the 445 sounds better than the BA, why won't he just replace the BA with the 445 in his line-up (assuming the 445 isn't drastically more expensive than the BA)?

LOL, I'm not even sure of the price of the 445 myself. I can see him eventually replacing the BA with a "2A3mk3" using the same magical 445 OPTs. I mentioned in a previous thread that the same 445 OPTs can be used with single 2A3 direct coupled with a 6SL7 like the older Moth designs. Now that would be very very interesting.

Now the question would be are there significant advantages to doubling the tubes like in the 2A3mk4 or 445? It's hard to say. Doubling the tubes will double current output, which would be really helpful for lower Z headphones like orthos. The Abyss' bass wasn't quite as tight and controlled as Craig's other amps (BA, old 2A3, etc.) than on the 445DA.

There's also conjecture that the doubled up tubes help with soundstage precision; although I wonder if the higher quality OPTs have more to do with that. (The 445 production was just ungodly amazing with the EML45s in terms of soundstage precision. Everything was nailed down to a T.) Where I felt the imaging precision on 445 development amp (without the Cinemag OPTs) was extremely good, it was not ungodly good like the 445 production. It's hard to say because this is from memory - no direct comparison. On the other hand, not having an interstage cap or transformer also brings benefits - talking about the proposed "2A3mk3"

Keep in mind that these are new developments. No one would have ever predicted how good the 445 OPTs turned out to be. Also, it's becoming more likely that the 445 will be produced in quantity.

The BA has word-of-mouth and word-of-thread on about 80 units now since '09.  It would not make sense to replace a steady seller, one with a steady production rhythm and a "known quantity."  If the 445/2A3 is good enough, I see him slotting is as tops in his lineup though.

Other thing to consider is the BA's smaller OPT's possibly being better for certain headphones.

Actually, the scary thing is the 445 OPT is the same size as the BA. BA psss wires had thick teflon jacket which took up a ton of space.

Wow, that is cool.  So what would prevent it from fitting in a BA chassis then, the interstages?  I just think a double-wide BA chassis would be super cool.
