TOP: This is the ECZD I got from Sneis. I owe him one for this. It's an older model s/n #11 with the soybean oil caps (the new ones have the Obligatos). I added more feedback to run orthos properly. It's similar to low output Z switch setting on the SE models. This reduced output Z from a measured 12 to 5. It does take a little bit of the magic away from the ZD, but bass performance is much improved with Abyss, HE-500, etc. Trade-offs. I also bypassed the 'lytics in the feedback loop with film caps. This cut down on the slightly treble stridency which the ZDs have to where it is more in line with other EC amps. Maybe one day I will commission a ZD with 6 output tubes. But damn, that thing will get hot.

Speaking about the ZD running hot. Those MIG-25 tubes are freaking hot. I welcomed myself to the ZD club. I think every other ZD owner has experienced this. It's mostly healed over now - two weeks later.

I wish I had some screenshots of Darin's OOYH software! Here a link: https://fongaudio.com/out-of-your-head-software/

I saw LFF watching videos on a laptop and for a while, I thought he was being an asocial bastard. Little did I know he was watching videos with Darin's OOYH software. BTW - the user interface is really nifty. The software works with JRMC.

I wish I had more time on this. I watched part of the Transformers 3 movie, and it was like fricking Dolby Atmos in my head. This was seriously really really neat. Screw the scientists at DTS or Dolby. This really isn't rocket science. It's college math. I think Darin's got it down. I'm hoping to download the trial and do a run down of this software. After all, it's my responsibility as a shill of the highest order. I hope Tyll covers it too.

OK, glad I found this thread. I am a little late to the Changstar party!

First, a HUGE thank you to Marv for hosting this mini meet. Yes, the amount of gear was epic. And the tri-tip and pork was unbelieveable!

Although I was a little bummed I could not bring the Bricasti M1 DAC. It was at the San Diego meet though. Not sure if anyone knew that. I can get it some other time if you guys want to DAC-off again. But I think the Berkeley Alpha wasn't too bad either!

Sorry guys, but no comments about the Oppo's please.

As far as the Russian amp/DAC, you can comment about it. Just remember, it's the very first prototype and cosmetically it will look completely different. Sonically it will probably change too. I was just glad everyone didn't hate it. (Or did they and they just didn't say so?) It was definitely a tough crowd. ;-) Also I can answer any questions about it. It is intended to be a commercial product eventually so it's more than a one-off DIY project.

And thanks for the shout out about my software. It's not for everyone, but I think even snobby headphiles might find it fun for watching movies.

If anyone is going to CES, I will have all the gear I had at Marv's at my booth at THE Show at the Flamingo during CES. Stop by and say hello.

Oops, missed this thread.  Thanks for having us over Marv!  I didn't get to the food until one piece was left because I was having an interesting conversation with the DSP guy (Alex? I forget, I suck with names)  :P

The average quality of the stuff there was really high (probably 2nd to the meet blubliss hosted a while back) so I was pretty satisfied with almost everything.

I wasn't really a fan of the WES...it sounded kinda syrupy compared to the other amps looped with it.  The Russian amp was very surprising...that little thing sounded quite nice.  It wasn't quite as lively as the modded 727 but overall I think it's got a lot of potential.  I was concerned with the somewhat low voltage swing when I read the specs so I made sure to test the volume/pot levels.  It got much louder than I'd ever listen by about 3 on the knob.  I don't think the 800V will be an issue in terms of dynamic compression which is a huge plus.  I'm interested in seeing the final product, and maybe this will lead to more estat amp designs using lower voltage sand to help with output C, availability, etc.

Darin's software was really neat and seemed VERY polished...much more so than the Smyth stuff.  I had some issues with a few profiles, and gain could be increased on the 2 channel profiles, but this could be a nice, more affordable option for those with ears that closely match those of the initial setup.

Didn't care for the HD800 from the Sabre DAC...too sterile, would be better as medical equipment. :P  Paradox was great, as always.

The DSP software was very impressive in terms of what it was able to do to the K701.  I've never liked that headphone before, but it sounded very nice with the DSP.  LFF told me something like "this is the longest I've listened to the K701" and that's the same thing I was thinking to myself 15 minutes earlier.  Still, the DSP can only fix so much so it will be interesting to hear it again with a more capable driver.  I told the designer to bring the SR-009 profile to the next meet, as he said it's much better than the DSP'd K701 and mind blowing.  I believe him.  I think this could be the future of headphone hifi, and it's exciting.  I wonder how difficult it'd be to do something similar.  From what I gathered he uses no compensation and a foam backing during measurement...I think this is very similar to how ultrabike was measuring, but it'd need some adjustment for planars.

Fun times, see you guys again in March.  Thanks for the t shirt!  8)

Damn... looks like an awesome meet. I'm jealous.

That Zana Deux... one day. I tried the DNA stratus with the lampizator gen 4 yesterday with my hd800s and it was a pretty amazing combo.

I just checked the demos on my Windows machine using Chrome and they worked.

The videos are all hosted on Vimeo, so if you can view any Vimeo videos on Vimeo.com, then you should be able to view the demo files on my demo site.

The audio files use an HTML5 interface, so it's possible your browser may not like the HTML5 code.
