CAL 2
« on: December 17, 2013, 08:10:14 PM »

Has anyone got hold of a Creative Aurvana Live 2 yet? I have just received one to try and quite like it.

It has a raised bass level but it sounds quite even handed over the rest of the spectrum. It looks like a good modding prospect to me and by perhaps lowering the bass quantity, there might be a really nice headphone there imo.

Didn't even know that this existed. A friend of mine has the original, but I have actually never heard it before... Are there any measurements for v2?

There are... FWIW:

one channel the same headphone was measured with 2 different methods.
taken from: personalaudio.ru

extremely well extended to both ends of the spectrum !

Looks good! A tad too much smoothing to interpret much from though.

Well, the graph shows a raised bass and it certainly does have a strong low end but it also goes down quite a long way.

The funny thing is that although I'm aware that it isn't a 'neutral' headphone, it's a really fun listen and sounds really big and speaker like. Treble is nicely under control too.

I have mine on loan from a company and I don't actually want to give them back tbh. I don't like the red colour on that version - it's too loud and shiny.

The other thing is the daft lead. It's designed to work with phones and Ipods and is useless coming from a stereo output on an amp. I substituted it for the Momentum lead and all's well. The HD598 lead also works.

It's better with an amp in the bass too imo. The bass is big, but it's pretty well controlled and lets other stuff through. Puts fun into your music!!

Compared head-to-head against the CAL!1 I like the original better. Too much bass and not enough presence on the 2 for me.

One to check out is the Accidentally Extraordinary 51st Studio. Review tomorrow.

I presume that they're available in the USA, Tyll? Not in UK yet.

They look good and solid.

I agree that the bass is very raised and so many wouldn't like it because of that. Have you got some (accurate) measurements on the CAL2? I've seen the graph from a Russian site but not much else.

They're measured, but I haven't made the pdf and uploaded it yet. Soon.

I compared with the Momentums, and you are right Tyll, bass is raised a bit too far on them. The Momentum actually sounds quite a bit more 'open' by comparison and has less of a 'bloom' in the bass.

Filter that bass down and the CAL2 might be quite nice since it is quite extended both ways.

I do find it very pleasant with rock music tbh but have always been aware that it's not exactly a 'neutral' sound!!

Are these in any way related to the Denon AH-D1100 in the way that the original CAL was basically a sister of the D1001?
