Stereophile RSA Nighthawk Review + Ray's Response
« on: December 16, 2013, 10:29:10 PM »

Dug this up, formatted it with my terrible MS Paint skills.  This is what was mentioned in the box, Volume 34 Issue 1, January 2011.  Review was by Fremer, was one of 4 phonos tested, each had blurbs of equal length and girth.  Remember, Ray is the one who keeps bad checks with people's names on them on his website homepage for years like a cheap Korean dry cleaner.  That's just his personality.  He is very warm in person.

Well, apparently no plankton and kind of meh:

"low level information ... was somewhat, obscured by the Nighthawk." and "Though not as detail or as dimensional as the TDL, the F-117 overall sound was smoother, more liquid, and somewhat more relaxed."

And...

"But the F-117 won't work at all if the charger is plugged in, so keep it charged"  p:8 ... I guess that's K for a DAP, but not sure if that's K for phono pre-amp...

Like Ray, I'm actually shocked too. Given the clearly stated pros and cons, and relatively concise approach, this is IMO one of the best reviews I have read from Fremer!

Ray definitely didn't write that.  I'd guess his son wrote it on his behalf.

Awwww. Baby got his little feelings hurt. But! But Enjoy The Music gushed all over it! And those audiophile blogs don't just gush over EVERYTHING, no never. Ray should send his amps to JA, see how well that works out for him.

It might work out well. Opamps measure great.

Oh no! Someone doesn't agree with me! He must be wrong because group X agrees with me and not him.

Taking criticism into account to possibly better yourself or your actions/works (or just for the sake of having a 2nd opinion) is a bad, slipperly slope, m'kay?

Ray would never do that. It's most likely that mean son of his.

Maybe there was something wrong with that particular unit that got past Ray's QC check.  :-\

FWIW, I had a lengthy audition of the Nighthawk and thought it was a great phono pre-amp. If I had money to spare, I would own one. I actually put it head-to-head with another persons uber-expensive phono stage and I honestly thought the Nighthawk sounded much, much better.
