Violectric HPA V200 ?
« on: October 21, 2013, 10:49:09 AM »

Ahoy there pirates!  ahoy

I am looking into upgrading my current rig but i don't want to spend much money.

My Current headphones are Sennheiser HD800(Anax2), Fostex T50rp(modified), and shortly Audeze LCD2.

I am using a Chinese Lehmann BCL clone with some minor modifications.

Dac i am using the modified ODAC i have presented here, there is not going to be any upgrade there for some time...

I generally like the sound of this setup, but i would like it even more, if it had a little more umpf in the lower registers, and if it where a little more laid back without loosing much out on detail.

A friend that has all these phones (plus HiFiman HE500) tells me i can't go wrong with the Violectric HPA V200 since he had the BCL and it is exactly what i am looking for...

It is difficult to listen to his rig, but i will do so quite soon...

What do you think? and any other recommendations welcome... remember i want a dynamic bass rich sound with sweet mids, and unobtrusive highs, and want to remain sub 1000euro (v200 is at 800e which suits my budget just fine)...

I personally find the Violectric sig a bit overly warmed and dynamically compressed.  At that price I'd recommend getting an Asgard 2 to get a similar sound sig that might even be better in some ways and save lots of money.  Ask purrin his thoughts on the bottom end as I mostly noticed how refined and smooth the top-end was on the Asgard 2.  Didn't notice any problems w/ bass.  Both should be better for your needs than the BCL.

To me, Violectric just has a warmish sound that blunts artifacts found in a normal HD800 which is why people like the pairing.  But I find it nerf's the 800's resolving abilities.  What I find interesting is that the Violectric amps should objectively qualify as objectively transparent but they absolutely sound colored and lacking total transparency.

I have the V200 here in front of me and mostly I agree with what Anax said - it is very smooth with a tad overly warm sound. It plays nice with my Paradox, a pleasant musical sound. However I don't know if I would like it with a HD650 for example.

The LCD-2 might be a tad sleepy with it. Depends on the source.

Thank you very much for the replies.

I am a little wary of the Asgard 2, not having enough power or headroom... am i wrong? should i maybe go for the Lyr (well within my budget) or the balanced Mjolnir (also within my budget)? would i have any benefits from the balanced configuration for the HD800/modfied Fostex T50rp/Audeze LCD2 ?
(changing cables is no problem for me it is easy i will make my own cables so this is not an issue)

You know if i go for one of these i will be going on your word only, since i have no means of listening to them beforehand...

The most important parameters are smooth treble and dynamics/speed with extra grunt in the bass

Between Lyr and Mjolnir - defo the latter. Then again the V200 has smooth trebble, dynamics and isn't slow. Your call, man.

From these three, I'd take the Mjolnir, because the V200 can be a bit too sleepy for some music I happen to like.

FWIW, the Mjolnir is IMO great with LCD-2 but I didn't like it that much with stock HD800. yet to hear it with Anax modded, although I can imagine it actually working well due to the Trouble Peak Reduction. everything else is fine/great except that peaky thingy, which was super distracting.

You mean that on the Mjolnir the treble was hot with stock HD800's? ... that will not do for me, because even with Anax2 on some recordings i still find them a little edgy, at least on my BCL/ODAC rig...

Any other recommendations apart from Schiit?

Wow!! :)p1 i had no idea they cloned the V200... http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=19491833305&clk1=6a8dc56428b8a163a677f466eb440ce1&upsid=6a8dc56428b8a163a677f466eb440ce1

Looks identical also... (and very reasonably priced...)

I might try it... also i see general consensus on the Schiit products... pity we don't have them in Greece, so that i could give them a listen...

I wouldn't bet my money on them sounding the same, tho. Lovely Cube and Matrix M-Stage sounds nothing like the BCL.
