Need help choosing headphones!!!
« on: September 18, 2013, 04:07:13 PM »

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum so apologies for anything i do drastically wrong.
So I am looking for an upgrade to my Sennheiser HD215s at around $250-$350.
I love a clear and balanced sound with plenty of bass but not too emphasised (I find the bass in my current cans a bit lacking).
Any thoughts on the sennheiser momentum on-ears?
I need them to be closed and reasonably portable. (not a huge priority bu enough so that I can take them in my rucsack.

Many thanks.

Grab the HD600's on massdrop.com for $309. Quick!  walk the plank

Never heard the HD215's though... Not sure if they have less bass than the HD600's but the HD600's are very well balanced with a bit of leaning towards the warm side.

Don't we have an advice thread?

+1 on the HD600 though.

If you want a little more bass, talk to Dan @ Mr. Speakers. for the MadDogs. Tell him Marv sent you and ask for the $10 discount. The HD600 is going to be more neutral though. Similar bass level to HD215, but more sub-bass, better extension. MadDogs will be more laid-back.

the on-ear momentums were a bit disappointing compared to the over-ear IMO. kind of boring dry thin sound.

I had a lot of problems finding good portable headphones a while ago, ended up with IEM's instead...
but... Sennheiser Amperior have a bit of bass/treble emphasis with a quite noticeable dip in the upper midrange. not sure if I'd consider it nice balance but they're nice and clear otherwise.
the over-ear momentums are good, much better balance, very slight dip in the upper mids as well but nothing major. kind of warm/not 'clear' sounding at times though.
audio technica ath-m50s are good but I suppose a bit U-shaped frequency response. midrange is a tiny bit muted compared to treble/bass. but I like them. built like tanks as well.
V-Moda M100 aren't what I'd consider clear or good balance but very well-built and good sound. big bass but not overpowering. treble's nice and strong without being harsh. but lack a bit of clarity I find.

I don't think they're 'portable' in the sense of light weight and all that, but MrSpeakers Mad Dogs are great sounding with a bit of bass emphasis (really good bass quality if you ask me). would have gotten if portability was not a big problem. still, worth checking out.
also depends on what you will drive them with though, I think. seemed quite hard to drive.

HD600 is not closed so ignore those. great sound though.

These closed HP's come to mind, all good performing but all different in presentation and a LEAP forward from HD215.

Whoops! I was drooling over the HD600 deal. I should have wiped the drool away so I could have read the words "closed" and "portable" facepalm

Wow, thanks for all the replies.
I understand that the HD 600s sound amazing, but unfortunately, open cans wouldn't really be appropriate. Still i have a pair of grado Sr60i which are pretty decent. The main issue is that I am in the UK so that hugely increases the cost of the Mad Dogs which I have been looking at. I am not looking for over-emphasized bass, but more depth in the sound. the momentums sounded good to me but didn't fit well enough.

I know there are mixed feelings on these, but what about the Denon Ah-d600s?

Thanks

mad dogs are IMO 1234 times better than the D600 (which I didn't like that much)
they don't have over-emphasized bass at all, just like a 1-2db boost. not at all overshadowing. which I found the D600 to be.

Ok, thanks,
I had my doubts about the Denons after hearing they were too coloured. They caught my attention because of the price drop from £500 to £200.

What are the HD 350 pros like a the price of £45?
