Denon appears to have tweaked their headphones to have slightly less bass than initially reported, but the new Denon D-series are notoriously low-fi sounding, including their TOTL model.

Closed headphones... that's tough. Not many good ones.

As Purrin mentioned, your price range and requirements are sorta hard. The Mad Dogs are probably a good choice, but they were anemic straight out of a phone when I tried them.

I own the Momentums and KEF M500 (both attempts at getting something my partner would use) and personally am not a fan of either. The KEF seems a little better to me straight out of phones/tablets, but that might be a personal preference. I like IEMs in that price range for portability, though.

You should check out the all purpose advice thread: http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,836.0.html

There's a lot of good info in there. Also, you should introduce yourself here:

Aside from what has been mentioned, you may want to look at the MDR-1R or UE6000.

oh yeah, MDR-1R are nice. relatively big bump in the mid-bass but nothing extreme. way less than any denon.
not overpowering at all. I quite like them. not a bad deal for ~200 or however much they are atm. looks and comfort are among the best.

What are the HD 350 pros like a the price of £45?

HD380Pro or HD250-II ?

HD250-II has deep lows and nice highs and an surprisingly 'open' sound for a closed headphone.
Only available second hand and may need to replace the pleather pads. Very comfortable and lightweight.
a fun listen !

HD380-Pro sounds  fairly 'Neutral' (it is a monitoring headphone).
Clamping force is, just like the SRH-840 on the firm side.
Most monitors are to ensure they stay put while moving around.
It doesn't do things exceptionally well though but does everything 'O.K.' not the most fun headphone.

When you are considering Denons, you might consider the Creative Aurvana Live! instead.
It is very similar (same drivers, manufacturer of both is Foster) to, though not exactly the same as, the Denon D1001 not to be confused with the D1100.

I will take a look at the creative. I have a fiio portable amp at home so the mad dogs should be driven without too much trouble. I have been interested i n the KEF M500s so will look into them. I love my KEF satellite speakers so expect good things from the cans.

Heard good things about the sonys but comlaints about noise coming from the cable.
How are the Amperiors for deep bass?. I know with Sennheiser I am getting the clarity I like, but not always sure about the bass. The frequency range is not as wide as with some larger (50mm or planar magnetic drivers)
How will the sound quality compare between the Mad Dogs and the Amperiors/momentums (I really am looking for the best sound at the price)

Thanks

Mad Dogs will do everything better, I find. the MDR-1R does not have a lot of sub-bass, nor do the Amperior really.

Can you get away with semi-open leaning towards closed?  The Philips L1 is an easy listen, enjoyable, folds flat so can be portable... and easy to find in Europe.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
