In order of preference, my recommendations would be:

MrSpeakers Mad Dogs
KEF M500
Yamaha HPH MT220 (they are kind of "studio" headphones but worth it!)
V-Moda M100
Shure SRH840
M-Audio Q40
PSB M4U 1 (not enough bass for you probably though...)
Sony MDR-1R
Sennheiser Momentum "over-ear"

All fall in the category of $300 or less, all provide from good to holy sheit levels of bass, tonality on most is pretty good, still most sound "boxy" but not too bad, and I believe ALL of them would be an upgrade to your current headphones.

Good Luck!

Most everything has been mentioned, but if you like to pick by ear, I'd add Beyerdynamic DT1350. Really need to pick them by hand, as there is/was lots of variation.

As to the above ones... I'd avoid Q40 and V-Modas. V-Modas are really meh everywhere with super boosted bass, M-Audio Q40 is kinda anemic in general, having thin sound (and it's not lack of bass).
Momentums are also kinda eh sounding out of the box - way too dark. Really have to boost treble on the equalizer with these, and that is usually at odds with portable listening.

EDIT: mixed up Shure 840 with 1840. 840 was that ear tweeter one.

U mean 940?  840 is pretty neutralish.

Love my (filtered, HD25-padded and 'bent' headband to suit my head) DT1350 but won't recommend it to anyone.. plus one needs to be lucky AND like it's signature. Not everyone does, I do (but with mods, don't like it without them)

call me interested in hearing the T51P (no typo there) and DT1350 'facelift' (also no errors here).
I expect/hope they have made some real improvements.  :-Z

So I am leaning towards these three:
Kef M500, Momentum 'On ear' and Mad dogs
What are thoughts on these three. I know the mad dogs probably sound best but wiht portability taken into consideration as well as just making the music sound great, which is better value for money? It is probably worth mentioning that I listen to just about every genre there is.

Cheers

I posted this in your other thread, but....

http://www.head-fi.org/t/639948/review-closed-portable-circumaural-around-ear-headphone-comparison-m50-z1000-tma-1-s-momentum-ue6000-mdr-1r

I'm friends with the author of that comparison piece, and I can vouch that he has good ears. He also doesn't approach things strictly from an "audiophile angle" which you might find useful.

Oh noes... a HF link! Quick, before it ends up being deleted! ...Oh wait.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Unfortunately, I am at a boarding school where most forum or blog sites are blocked including head-fi. I was lucky to find this website. If you could maybe outline the conclusion or ,if possible, paste the article into the thread (I'm not sure f that is allowed or not)

They block head-Fi!  Sounds like a very good school!

How much better are the mad dogs with the alpha pads. There is a pair with the older pads for £180 in Cambridge (UK) Any thoughts?

Alpha pads are recommended and can be acquired separately, but I suspect that may be one of the older Revs of the MD if it has the Shure 840 pads.  Not sure what is considered the best version, but you still may want to ask the seller if they know what Rev it is...currently MrSpeakers is on 3.2.
