The review of head-fi article
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:01:06 AM »

Hi there,

I've never actually seen and hardly heard of this forum before.  I was sent a couple emails by different people telling me I should link my article here since it would be appreciated or something.

So here it is... http://a-review-of-head-fi.tumblr.com/

That's all, have a nice day.

And the other day you created a new account over at HF and spammed the board with that link. You got up to what... around 60 posts before they deleted you?

It is a way to prove a point. I glanced through the 'review'...

Regarding HF, it is run the way the owners want to run it.

I got to 45 posts, mostly chatting away in the anime thread.  I put the link in around 5 threads, including the DIY cable thread whereafter you flagged me I think.  No harm done ;)

They blocked my ISP now I think, well whatever, it's a piece of journalism.

Yes, they run it how they see fit, that doesn't make it right.  It takes quite a long time to actually learn how something is run.

Having several perspectives speeds up the process, especially for the average onlooker which is the primary clientele.  Having head-fi versus Nw4vGuy versus Rin Choi is only three or four colours to the rainbow, perspective is key, imho / IME.

Yeah you only come to know when you are banned, because then you know whats happening behind the scene.
Actually you can get banned for helping other people.
Bringing to people attention new products which can beat sponsor products.
Another thing is there is no privacy policy. All PM are read or snooped.

On being banned you can be accused of anything from being Member of Trade or for shilling. There is no way to contest it. I have seen lot people contesting it through blogs or facebook pages.

You have the freedom of expression to email their sponsors, if you want.

"Dear X, I thought you were a professional company, now I see you are..." etc.

Head-Fi is a privately run and owned forum.  They can run it however they want.  If that way is at odds with what you're looking for in a forum, there are other sites you can go to.  They have no responsibility to do things the way their members want.

If enough people have a problem with it, they will leave or start their own forums until changes are made out of the hemorrhaging of members and, as you mentioned, its affect on analytics affect their bottom line enough to make changes.

Personally, I think HF is right for a lot of people, especially casual members and hobbyists.  But there are a lot of people its not right for, whether it has to do with tone and moderation, quality or style of content, level of commercialization, whatever.  And those members are finding other places to get that fix, there are tens of these forums these days.

Bottom line, they owe you nothing and can do whatever they want.  If you miss your friends and the community, well, communities migrate on the internet all the time.

That is why I refrain from uttering complaints about HF.

It is of no use unless you can improve the site or participate in keeping it pleasant.

KBI, nwavdeuche and others complained about HF. We know what HF is about and to whom it caters...

P.S. I wrote nwav-g-u-y yet it changed to his nickname here. I understand that sentiment too (i.e. HC, RG, CS).

The tone of your analysis is "If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen [that's it]".

NwAv wrote about the kitchen, so people started buying different kitchenware and drinking different yoghurt.  That's the entire point of journalism / review.

If you're going on a holiday, how do you choose your destination and hotel?  You read travelbooks and reviews.  I'm not insinuating a 1-star hotel "owes me something", but thanks for your lesson in hotel politics nonetheless.

I largely agree with you. You have made your point.

Complaints about HF quickly become old though. After reading a number of rant/complaints/blogs/reviews etcetera what is there to add? HF is what it is, serves a certain purpose and sometimes annoys people.

A complaint thread is understandable. Now what?

Fuck it, time for music...
