What about counter sinking the screws into the faceplate and then making an aluminum cap to go over the holes, kind of like ikea does to cover up screws on their furniture.

for XLR jacks to be flush with the front of a panel, the panel can only be 0.11" thick.  cant really countersink them very deep.

Tom Christensen (sp?) Design: This was a 300B, DIY build by a really nice guy whose name, of course, I have forgotten. He based it on a circuit by the bolded name provided here. A truly fine sound and, until the BHSE/SR-009, as open-sounding as anything I heard, and that's important to me.

He did a good build thread in HF's DIY section on the build if anyone is interested in what he built.

That IS one helluva build. I've been salivating over that thread for quite some time!

Forgot to mention. Mr. Speakers T50RP mod. Really nice. Similar tonal balance to LCD2, but better FR IMO as not as rolled. I know he had been tweaking the formula for some time, but I think Dan has finally done it. Definitely super highly recommended for a entry level audiophile headphone for anyone who likes a slightly laid back sort of sound. A poor mans LCD2.

I finally got to hear Justin's (HeadAmp) GS-X. Wow! Awesome. I've seen pictures of it, but the chrome finish looks so much nicer in person than in photos. I sort of regret that I cancelled my order (I needed something ASAP and the Mjolnir was available at the time.)

I would describe the GSX as accurate and honest sounding with a lot finesse (don't use shitty sounding DACs or headphones - this amp is not gonna cure their ills). And I'm not talking about finesse in the wimpy sense, but more like the "finesse" that the 49ers with Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and Ronnie Lott had. Really digs into the music. I tried out my HE-500s and never heard them so sound good. This amp made a strong a impression on me. There was one other amp (not from Headamp) that I hadn't heard yet that also made a strong impression, but I can't talk about that one unless I kill you afterward (it's currently in development).

I need a pic. Justin or someone else, can you provide me with a pic?

EDIT: http://cdn.head-fi.org/5/5e/5e36151d_LAMeet7.20.1326of31.jpeg

I'm telling you guys, this amp looked great. Like something Cylon from the recent Battlestar Galactica series, and with sound quality which measured up to the looks too!
Glad you had a great first impression of it. Soon as I get mine and have a little time with it, I'll send it out to Mike and you guys can have some extended sessions. Expecting it any time now, but Justin seems busy with BHSE output, currently.

This is the RSA DarkStar. I finally got to hear it. It looks really nice, like the GS-X, but in a different style.

It makes we want to radio into HQ to report an artillery position.

This is Woo's WA7. I finally got to hear it.

Hmm, lack of comments to avoid controversy perhaps?  BTW, it was fitted with the Electro Harmonix upgrades for the meet.  If you're not too keen on those, I can tell you that you're not going to like the stock tubes any better.  The highs can get a bit brittle with the stock tubes.

I didn't take a pic of the Denon stand, but the D7100 pair I tried seemed to have sounded better than the one I heard at H3 last year - the one which Jude brought. That H3 D7100 sounded like a fart canon with way too much bass and obvious bass distortion. While his D7100 was still bassy, overall balance was much better. It's possible the formulation may have changed. Warren sent me a pm a while back saying he was in possession of the D7100 which did indeed not sound as bad as the one heard at H3.

Yeah, I've since learned that the one at H3 might have been a pre-production unit... which would explain a whole lot.  I have a suspicion that a pre-production unit may have somehow made it's way to Tyll measurement rig as well.  Having said that, I still think the D600 is a much better bet sonically.  Did you get a chance to hear that one?

Here's the ALO Studio Six fed by a Mytek DAC (PCM, not the Stereo DSD). This setup was good sounding. Supposedly this amp can simultaneously drive multiple pairs of headphones without sacrifice to fidelity. The geek side of me is curious as to how the amp is able to do this.

Yeah, I can confirm that there seems to be little to no degradation to SQ due to the number of cans that are plugged in.  Well, at least with the followin configuration LCD-3 + HD 800 + Q701 + Mad Dogs.  I would imagine the sucker would balk at a host of more demanding cans, because, you know, physics.

WA7 wins my prize for best-looking unit at the meet. It was obviously designed to look great next to a MacBook, and by that criterion it is a complete success.

;)  That's why I requested a silver one from Jack, even though I would personally have preferred black.

The only real problem with this meet, which is a nice problem to have, I guess, is that it was really crowded.

Believe me, the attendance exceeded our wildest expectations.  In fact, right up until noon of that day, we were still a bit sketchy as to whether Ethan was going to take a hit on it.  So all y'all that showed up in the afternoon at the last minute, you made a difference!

Warren and Ethan did a great job.

 :)  Thanks!

I honestly don't see a point to a standalone DAP anymore.  When is a person ever going to be without their smartphone?

1.  I always have my phone with me.
2.  It always sounds like dick.

So...

I can promise you that - not only does your phone sound better - but that my phone is sub par to begin with.  I keep thinking I should get an iPhone or something... but then lethargy sets in.  Plus, not all that keen to get sucked into the Apple ecosystem.

Having said that, I'm definitely with Purrin about the SQ of the AK120.  Very little complaints from me about it.   :)

So fallen out of love with the TakeT H2?
I had thought of getting a pair to try but a lot of money to invest should they not live up to expectations
I undestand they are VERY sensitive to placement so the sweet spot is small.

Over the years I've tried so much stuff but always end coming back to stats. Even though they have their limitations its like comparing a crystal clear mountain stream with a muddy pool  ::)

I forgot to take a picture of the rig I took to the meet on behalf of Cavalli Audio and JPS Labs. I brought my PS Audio PWD2 DAC with the OR5 USB/I2S converter. Hooked that into the LAu to power the AB-1266 headphone.

This is what Frank Cooter had to say (LOL, I got permission to quote him):

I've been going back between the STAX and the Audezes. This is the sound I've been looking for.

P.S.

Tyll did mention to me that this pair did not have the "treble noise" issues he had with his review pair.

Very interesting regarding Tyll's comments on the lack of treble noise. Wondering just how much variation exists between sets, because my set doesn't seem to have this issue either going by Tyll's description.

Also pretty much in agreement with the comments on them being "what I'm looking for" insofar as a mix of stereotypical ortho and stat goodness. I felt the same way about the TakeT H2+ for a while, which is piezoelectric, but the FR of those is just way too wonky and amp dependent to make them viable long-term for me. I really need to buckle down and do a comparison between the Abyss and the new Floats, both of which have really captivated me with their way of doing things.

Really wanting to hear the AK120. I love love love the form factor of the AK100, so if the sound is finally up to snuff it might be worth the investment.

Anyway, thank you to everyone for posting meet impressions. Hopefully I can attend some again soon.
