I'd really like to know how they got to double the cost of the AK100.

Oh you know how.  People would pay for it, that's how.  That said, one chip per channel did make a noticeable improvement to my ears and I didn't/don't like the AK100.  That said, I'm very happy w/ my portable rig atm after running through a bunch of opamps to breath new life into the rig.

I honestly don't see a point to a standalone DAP anymore.  When is a person ever going to be without their smartphone?  Thus the DAP becomes another brick to haul around when the argument for all-in-one DAPs has been to reduce brickage.  Best to just get a DAC/amp that can work w/ your phone which you will usually have on you anyway.  If the AK120 were around the $400-$500 mark, I'd consider it, maybe.  But at >$1K, hahahaha!!

Right, I meant more in terms of I'd like to hear their excuses for why it costs twice as much. If the actual build cost increased by even 10% I'd be surprised. The problem with using your phone as the basis of a high-end portable rig is there has to be a way to access the digital output and use it as a transport only. The HP out of my G-Note is pretty ghastly, I'd much rather listen to even my Cowon S9. I use the Cowon for traveling because the battery lasts 40+ hours, and my HM-801 mostly around the house.

I still don't know why Fang opted for the 9018 which is the hardest DAC to power properly and get decent sound out of, but supposedly the HM-901 with balanced or minibox amps is very very nice.

People are going usb digital, even coax, from their Galaxy S4 to the Leckerton.  Is the Note not similar?

Here's the EC445. The development platform for the x4. I'm always curious as to whether I am hearing shit or not, so it was nice that two guys at the meet stated that they heard a clear improvement with the 445 over the BA. You can read all about the 445 (or Levi) on this site.

The power supply is an experimental unit using Xenon gas tubes. I don't think it will be available for the first run of the x4 (whenever that will be), but it may be available sometime in the future for an additional $1000? (the actual production unit, if it's ever made, will likely look much more fancy).

All you guys lining up to sell your BAs now, my phone # is... :-)

As a relative noob to headphones but with 30+ years in the high-end, I thought I would add my listening impressions from the LA meet. Purrin covered most of it, so I'll try not to ramble.

Eddie Current Super 7: Just as many of you have advised, this amp does a wonderful job on the Sennheiser HD-800, my primary HP for some time now. A very dimensional sound, even through cans, with a very even tonal balance that's maybe just a tiny bit rolled at the extremes.

Headamp GSX-2: This is the best I have ever heard the HD-800 sound. I tried to buy the demo but missed. :-)

Stax Omega 2, Mk. 1 (SR-007): Now I understand what all the fuss is about.

Stax SR-009 & Headamp BHSE: Now I understand what all the fuss is about. I figure I am too old to spend $10,000 on my next HP + amp combo, not being independently wealthy, but this was nothing short of remarkable. This is the first and only headphone that got me going back over decades of electrostatic and ribbon speaker experience, comparing qualities such as instrumental separation, layering, effortlessness, frequency extension--really, you name it. I don't know for sure about dynamics; I would have to listen longer and to more demanding material. But wow. I didn't hear the brightness that others have derided, but I am also aware that I have lost some HF over the years.

Donald North Audio Stratus: Read Purrin's comments. He covers it entirely. Plus, what a thoroughly charming person is Donald North, the kind with whom you'd feel good about doing business.

Tom Christensen (sp?) Design: This was a 300B, DIY build by a really nice guy whose name, of course, I have forgotten. He based it on a circuit by the bolded name provided here. A truly fine sound and, until the BHSE/SR-009, as open-sounding as anything I heard, and that's important to me.

I'll close by saying how much I enjoyed my first-ever HP meet, most especially the camaraderie and general good spirit of all involved. Plenty of nice feeling to go around.

The GS-X sure is a looker... aww yeah.... THE SCREWS! Now all I see are those screws! WHY?

i had a "Doh!" moment after i already had the panels for it. You can't install the screws from the back of the XLR jacks because there is no room for the head on that side -- also, for the XLR jacks to be flush, the panel is too thin for standard socket screws to also be flush. And the head diameter of flat-head socket screws is too large. On the combo jacks, you can do it though.  But then i'd be left with 2 screws just for the 4-pin XLR and that might look weird. What I realized afterwards I could do is solder the 4-pin XLR to its own circuit board (vertically), and mount the circuit board to the panel instead of screwing in the jack. that would work and hold the jack well enough. But, i wasn't going to change it for the next batch because it pisses off people who were earlier adopters. so screws it is! they blend better on the black panel.

Perhaps change the philips screw drives to a more attractive one (hex maybe)? Something a little less "screw-y".

the problem is, for some reason, the hex screws have a head diameter that is too large.  I looked. Also, they should be the self-threading (like sheet metal) type screws, though it is possible to thread the plastic jacks, but this requires a larger screw which makes the problem worse. plus to be attractive I can't use regular steel screws, they need to be available in black and stainless or nickel plated. aluminum also works as they can be anodized. basically, unless I wanted a standard socket head screw that stuck partially out of the panel, I was out of options other than custom fabrication of screws. in the future the better option is to find the way to mount everything from the back of the panel, but like I said i don't want to screw over early adopters even for a small cosmetic upgrade.

He did a good build thread in HF's DIY section on the build if anyone is interested in what he built.

What about counter sinking the screws into the faceplate and then making an aluminum cap to go over the holes, kind of like ikea does to cover up screws on their furniture.
