The PS Audio Perfectwave DAC PWDII Mystery
« on: July 03, 2013, 03:37:36 AM »

Just a note from Purrin explaining context of situation:

As some of you may or may not know, Anaxilus, LFF, and I made a direct comparison with the PWD MKI (upgraded to II) and a newer production PWD MKII (running 2.20.)  The newer production PWD MKII blew chunks. We won't go far as to say that all MKII's sound like this. I believe Anax had been in contact with Paul @ PSAudio, and Paul did acknowledge that a few units were not quite right and needed a digital board replacement. (Paul seemed pretty cool about stuff.) Basically, the newer PWDII (some of you guys heard this particular unit at the TX meet), while maintaining some of the sonic characteristics of the PWDI/II (which CEETEE, Anax, and I own) had some deficiencies:
  • Lack of sub and low bass. This was the most obvious and troubling. Through several tracks, the newer PWDII did not pressurize the room (a la my sub) as my PWDI/II. This was very obvious.
  • Low level information retrieval was similar, but the newer PWDII was a slight notch down.
  • The newer PWDII was not as good in terms of micro-dynamics, macro-dynamics and speed. It sounded flatter, less interesting, less lively.
  • Severe congestion / loss of clarity during busy or dynamic musical passages. There were several moments listening to dynamic sections / crescendos of music, and we were going like WTF?
  • We tried various interfaces, including USB and OR5. The result was the same.
In a nutshell, the newer PWDII sounded like a shadow of its former incarnation (the PWDI upgraded to II). Again, we don't know if this affects all newer units or just a few.

ORIG POST FROM CEETEE BELOW:

So has anyone tried this new version of 2.2.0 that only works for newer MKII ONLYPerfectWave DACs?  Supposedly good.]http://www.psaudio.com/vanilla/uploads/FileUpload/8b/c6172e1ac3229de558301daec8a2b0.rar

So has anyone tried this new version of 2.2.0 that only works for newer MKII ONLY PerfectWave DACs?  Supposedly good.

Yes, for several months now.

I have been running it along with 2.14b (bridge s/w) and much prefer it to any other combination.
There was some confusion about the individual files that made up 2.2.0.  The desired file version in question should have PWDPL109.hex and not the PWDPL107.hex file.

Better resolution and overall balance, and this combination sounds less 'pinched'.
AND the picture of the album shows up reliably on the front panel of the PWDII. :)

Nice.  Thank you!  Do you have a "MKI to MKII" upgrade?
This is what I have gathered from the thread...is there a "newer" pld 109 given out now via email?

I have the MkII and when using the network bridge, the differences are easily noted between the various combinations of bridge firmware and the s/w that runs the PWD.

And I don't think that the 2.2.0 / 2.14b combo will work on a MkI, but since I read it on the Internet (and I have never heard a MkI) it must be true…
Right? :)p13

Well, I asked anax about the new 2.2.0 pld 109 from June 2 a little while after it came out.  He's still under the impression the upgraded MK1's sound better than any of the NEW PWDII's firmware, when he tested them before.  I don't know which of the several 2.2.0 firmwares he tested before or whether he tested the newest one yet.  I've looked on the PSA forums and people say it's comparable to 2.0.2 and much better than the other 2.2.0 versions.   I just wouldn't buy from PSA because they have so many fucking firmware revisions.  You'll never know which one is going to destroy your DAC or sound like shit or w/e.  There's just no consistency.  Firmware upgrades should fix bugs, add new features, and improve SQ, but the most important aspect should be improve the SQ.  I don't care about them adding DSD or 768Khz or w/e in a new firmware version if it sounds worse than the previous firmware version.

They really need to get their firmware version control down.

I'm still rocking 2.0.3 I believe thankfully!

I don't think we've heard the June 2 PLD109. I think it was 107 that we heard.

I don't think we've heard the June 2 PLD109. I think it was 107 that we heard.

2.20 PL1.05 March 2012
2.20 PL1.07 Jun 2012
2.20 PL1.09 Jun 2013

Yea, that's what I thought.  I asked like right after the PL109 came out, but anax was still adamant about New MKII's sounding bad.  I don't think he realized at the time there were these secret version differences in 2.20.  I'd love to see you guys compare the 2.20 PL109 to 2.03.  If it still sounds bad, then PWA hasn't done it's job.  If it sounds better, PWA is still in trouble for keeping this under the table.  After all, I still think it's shady there's all these "PL" versions of 2.20.  The "PL" version was not mentioned in release notes as these are all considered 2.20 firmware versions.  The people that found these "PL" versions were the users themselves who downloaded the firmware file and noticed the change in file names/properties.  I remember reading one user's new MKII they just bought didn't work correctly without having to manually update to the newest 2.20PL.  PWA not making these updates as 2.21 and 2.22 should mean, under normal developmental circumstances, that they deem these updates very very very insignificant to the 2.20 core firmware. Then how do you explain the number of users saying this 2.20PL version sounds much better than the other 2.20PL versions if the revision is so minor?  Maybe Paul doesn't want to eat his own words that 2.20 sounds the best and want those new MKIIs to keep shipping out to dealers?  It's all speculation at this time though.

I really wish they show more transparency on this.  Also, the next firmware update in development goes to 2.40? yea.....Okay I guess these PL versions count as 2.30, so....why not just name them 2.30 lol
