From what I have learned 2.4.4 is 2.4.3 but an attempt to lessen or eliminate the pops and ticks, etc.

I haven't run it yet to know one way or the other, but I'll try it out in the next day or so.

I was getting pops and clicks when changing tracks in JRMC on 2.1.0. Went away on 2.4.4. Only hesitation for me going back to an earlier FW. Edit: I had only tested this with USB, but the USB implementation on MKI doesn't seem all that great.

So 2.4.4 does have fewer clicks and pops but some still remain.
They weren't a 'problem' for me but some were afraid for their tweeters.

I can't hear any SQ differences between 2.4.3 and 2.4.4

Hey John, read some of your impressions on the PSA forum with the DSD.  You had the factory pwdmk2 right, not the upgrade kit?  How would you compare the macro dynamic swings like punch and slam on the mk2 versus the DSD?

It's a factory upgraded MKI to MkII unit.

And as for a direct comparison of the micro detail I can't really say.

My HD800 system has much more inner detail and small signal dynamics than the speaker system I heard.  And until I get a chance to do and A-B using my system it would be 'premature' to speculate.

But having said that, the signature of the C3 (as I call Cohesion, Coherence, Coupling) was there, which tends to suggest that the small signal dynamics et al. are at least at the same level as a (slightly) tweaked PWDII.

And after seeing the boards and understanding the circuit topology and it's simplicity, such as there is no active output amplification, etc. I would surmise it should provide better SSD, and better C3.  Which when added together can result in an improvement of what I call the Spooky/Scary (magical is another term that applies) listening experience.

That the S/S was also evident, although not to the same degree, suggests to me that the DS should surpass the PWD in these and all related areas of sonic wonderfulness.

c* crew.  Did factory pwd mk2 get shelved in favor of mk1 indefinitely?  I have to make sure I find a mk1 to mk2 kit I think, there's no doubt going to be a bunch of factory mk2 kits for grabs :(

Edit -- Ok will be doing a mk1->mk2 retrofit here soon; not quite the same as buying a new kit from PS Audio as I don't think they sell that anymore. Fingers crossed!!

I would like to add these pics for any future reference if it happens to help anyone.  They are telling about the differences in the PWD1 versions of the analog board which may or may not impact this "mystery."

In this particular mk1 it had the type B analog board installed by default and I swapped in the A board along with the mk2 digital board.

Sorry for the craptacular picture quality - I was in somewhat of a hurry.

Here you can see the mk1 top vs mk2 bottom digital boards

Here you can see the two different analog boards version B left and version A right

Here's board B alone

Here's board A alone

They appear largely the same except the placement of the cables that would connect the analog board to the digital board and the in/out connectors are slightly different.  Why PS Audio would end up doing this is beyond me even from a cost perspective.

PSA just released PWD firmware version 2.4.5

I just loaded it.  Supposedly it 'cures' the pops and ticks problem along with being sonically better.

We'll see.

I will but it will be a week or more until my latest mods fully settle in and I can clearly hear the differences.

ps Oh yeah it may not be a click and pop cure release, but a sound and mute and filter control restoration release, along with a sound improvement…
