BK-16 kit measurements...

12" from the left driver. In-room. 1/6 octave smoothing (which is very little)
  • Comb effects prevalent at 150Hz and 250Hz. There's obviously some bleed in from the horn mouth a about a 0.5 meter below.
  • Minor cone breakup modes at 3.7kHz and 5kHz. Not that bad. Certainly not as bad as the resonances we see in headphone measurements.
  • Lots of rolloff measuring so close to the cone.
  • Generally, the measurement is not as smooth as headphones. All sorts of boundary effects come into play which create oddities all over the replace. Fortunately, we don't hear at 1/6 octave acuity with real music.

So taking a real broad look at that, can one assume it's "mid-centric" sound from these speakers?

Mid-centric with very slight ringing at the 3.7k and 5k breakup modes is an accurate way to describe it. I didn't catch the ringing at 3.7k, but Luis actually did. It's important to understand that these resonances are nothing like Beyer or Grado. Also, keep in mind this measurement near the driver only partially takes into consideration the contribution from the back loaded horn.

BTW, our (Luis and my) combined efforts using our ears to EQ actually yielded results which matched measurements. Some stuff was too hard to catch with our ears - the comb effects and so forth.

Skipping a lot of intermediate measurements... This measurement was taken at what I would consider the prime listening position, about ~5 feet from the back wall and ~11 feet from the speakers.

RTA 1/3 octave. (The above measurements were 1/6 octave using MLS.)
  • Note dips of comb effect at 70Hz, 100Hz, 170Hz.
  • Note peaks of comb effect at 85Hz, 150Hz, 250Hz.
  • Rolloff begins at 50Hz.
  • The slight rise at 20Hz is probably room gain. This speakers are in a living room which opens up into the family room and open kitchen.
  • Cone breakup resonances can still be seen at 3.7k and 5k.
  • Lacks last 1/2 octave or treble air. It probably won't matter to me in 10-15 years.
  • There is more mid-bass than the graph indicates. (we gotta use our ears sometimes)

After EQ using EasyQ in JRiver...

EQ settings were very light. No more than -3db at most spots. Essentially this is how I EQ'd:
  • Notched down peaks from comb effect at 150 and 260Hz, -2db and -4db respectively.
  • Brought down midrange region centered at 850Hz down -3db
  • Notched down driver resonance modes at 3.7k and 5k by -2db abd -3b respectively.
  • Bumped up lower treble region centered at 8k by 2db.
Lots of little EQ adjustments, but very small adjustments. I don't believe in applying EQ with high magnitudes. I also tend not to mess with correcting narrow / small dips.
