Listened to it today... Technically it's a well done album.  Quite "safe"... Sea Change 2?


Beck still claims there is a genre change album in the works, but this isn't it.

Wild Beast - Present Tense

This is a really well recorded album showing off what I think are great song writing skills and strong vocals.  The synths are bit more laid back than they were on Smother, especially the percussion. While you'll immediately recognize the album as one from Wild Beasts, if you're familiar with them, you'll also feel that they've taken a slightly different approach with this album, and for me it works.  It's worth a stream, and you just may find yourself buying it.

Slough Feg - Digital Resistance

Wow!  Maybe some of you were already familiar with Slough Feg, and maybe being from San Francisco I should have been, but this was my first exposure to this classic metal band and I'm totally digging this concept album.  Somewhere between Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden there is no mistaking that these guys have been playing together for a long time.  The mature sound is addicting.  I've only streamed this album today, but I'm searching for a nice hi-res or vinyl version to buy.  Highly recommended for the classic rocker looking for something new!

I'm streaming St. Vincent at the moment.

Yeah, this is rad. Really dig her guitar work. Crunchy rhythm punctuated by characteristic licks, angelic melodies transitioning to punk rock swagger, quirky beats that you can't help but groove to and anthems that explode from nowhere. Classic St. Vincent.

Ah! Record Store Day comes around again. Last time I couldn't get in my store as it was knee deep in hipsters.

Yeahhh -- I'm digging the new St. Vincent a lot too. I love the jerky, angular melodies juxtaposed with her singing. It's a lot more processed, compressed and digital than her previous efforts, which fit the theme of the album of navigating the real world and digital world. The second half of Huey Newton gets me head thrashing every time. I hope we eventually get a full on rock out album from her at some point.

Yes! These three have been on heavy rotation from me this year -- especially that Stephen Malkmus. So many awesome little guitar licks all over that record.

The Gardens & Villa and Phantogram aren't really grabbing me the same way their previous efforts have.

Lots of good stuff this year so far, despite a few disappointments for me personally (Broken Bells, Warpaint). That Beck album isn't grabbing me either, but then again it took me a few months to warm up to Sea Change.

A few other albums I feel are a cut above the rest this year that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

ceo - Wonderland


Temples - Sun Structures


Planningtorock - All Love's Legal


And, a bit early, but I'm obsessed with both the new War on Drugs and Real Estate records:
