Not a lot of disc player talk here
« on: May 18, 2013, 07:44:43 PM »

ahoy Paraphrasing a prominent thread in this forum... Apparently, CD and SACD players are in decline, but I want one for my existing collection. Can folks recommend a few such players for me at say, up to $1000 and up to $2000?

Thanks,
Jeffrey  :-\

If you want a SACD player, good luck with finding one as they are more difficult to find than conventional CD players. My PS3 can play SACDs, but my main CD player is my Marantz CD5003. It's reasonably priced and sounds pretty good as well.

I've been happy with my Nuforce CDP-8.  It's been a solid performer.  I mostly decided to get it because at the time I needed a good transport in a half rack size.  I always wished that it played more formats than just CD.

It's seeing less and less use as I get things ripped and base my listening around the computer and vinyl.

I bought a Rotel RDD-980 for $150 on Audiogon. It is a transport only, no internal DAC. Has a Phillips drive and optical and coaxial outputs. This thing will play for another decade or more and has the fastest loading and response time I've ever seen. Best $150 I've spent in audio. I don't use it often, but it is my reliable backup and meet transport.

If you want SACD, the Sony XA5400ES is a great player. I liked it so much that I bought the Modwright version, but even stock I think it's a very nice-sounding machine. You can find them new for $1100, and used in the $800 range. (Disclaimer: I'm selling my Modwright over on head-fi, but not because I don't like it -- rather, just making a move to computer-based audio.)

hello,

if wishes were horses, i would love to have one of these:

the Oppo line's high end players seem to get very good reviews in the high-end press. ;D

The Oppo is a mediocre digital transport at best.  I had a 103 which is the same except for the analog output stage.  It was outclassed by current Marantz and Cambridge Audio offerings, not to mention vintage players that were even better.

In fact, I found the Bluray playback surprisingly unspectacular as well.  Nothing special about the Oppos IME.

A friend of mine has an old Sony XA series but impressions seem to indicate a lack of low end performance.  I'll have to give it a listen one of these days.

If you can, try looking for the Marantz SA-15S2B Limited for sale used somewhere. You might be able to find one at a good price.
