Hmm, I'm guessing that'll be their answer to the LCD3 then. I wonder what the price point will be.

Yep. Long before the famous "Lexicon" Oppo, there was the "Goldmund" Pioneer. Nobody in high end audio really takes them seriously, and I would think (hope) that somebody with the sense to buy Boulder rather than say Krell or Audio Research would avoid anything with a Goldmund badge on it. Wilson I'll leave out.

Goldmund has made great strides since those unfortunate days of the Pioneer DVD clone. Their engineers have been hard at work on catching up to the latest in state of the art technology and today they offer a "Blu-Ray" player at a mere 20 times the cost of their DVD counterpart http://www.avhub.com.au/index.php/News/Hi-Fi/goldmund-eidos-reference-blue.html. I hear whispers in the industry that their R&D department is only a couple of years away from introducing a revolutionary upgrade which would actually allow for transmission of 3D images  :-DD This will of course require licensing a whole new board and cushioning it in at least 50kg of fine Italian marble, but selfless humanitarians that they are, current owners will be given a discount which will bring the upgrade price down to only a few dozen measly thousands.

Note that if I ever to run across a Goldmund showcase at an audio expo I will temporarily secure the services of the biggest, most diarrhetic service dog I can find to carefully guide my way around their equipment.

It's sad to see headphones go from a fun, affordable hobby to the gold-plated, overpriced audiojewelry model chased by "big" high-end names. It's the same crap that made us get out of high end 20 years ago.

When will manufacturers learn that there's only so much uber-priced, high-margin product you can stuff down an outdated, inefficient rep/distributor/dealer pipeline, in search of the few thousand (or few hundred, literally, depending on the nosebleed price level you've chosen) who have the wherewithal to support it? Awaiting the inevitable $20,000, $50,000, and $100,000 phones now.

I had someone tell me they heard a great set of "mid-priced" planar loudspeakers at a recent show. I was excited to hear them, because my aging Eminent Tech speakers are due for an upgrade. Turns out "mid priced" to him was $25,000. Here's a newsflash, dude: $25,000 speakers are beyond-the-pale crazy.

If people start calling $2500-5000 headphones "mid priced" in a few years, then, well, we truly are insane. And we deserve what we get.

What he said.

I was ranting about this on head-fi in 2007. It's part of why I left.

Manufacturers will learn when people stop buying them. And people will stop buying them when the hobby fosters an atmosphere that encourages critical thinking. Unfortunately, most places have done the opposite, and encouraged not hurting anybody's business. Which, of course, is a dinner bell for rip-off artists everywhere.

You reap what you sow. Enjoy your overpriced crap, there will be plenty more to come.

I do hope that at least where headphones spill into the professional-gear arena (like IEMs, at least of the stage/custom variety) some sanity will remain, even if they're really expensive to begin with.

I vote we start an Overpriced shitehawk manu Thread of Shame to list all these little wonders and reasons they are despised.
Could prove an invaluable reference .
