Wacky non-audio uses for audio products
« on: April 22, 2013, 02:20:47 PM »

This is a thread for companies and people using audio products in imaginative ways.

I have two examples to start the thread, both from Japan, both I have demo'd.

1. Special Weight Loss Device from Japan.

It's a circular platform you stand on with a display/controls/hand-hold in front of you and it promises that just 30 (or however many) minutes a day and you will lose weight!

What is it? Well, the thing you stand on turns out to be a large subwoofer and it supposedly sends low frequency waves through you at some sort of fat-melting frequency. You definitely feel some below human hearing range vibration.

2. Special massage device from Japan... no, not the one you're thinking of.

So, there's a massage device from a former engineer from Aiwa where you listen to special music (a bit new-agey) via headphones and the bass and sub-bass gets separated out and played via a special padded sub-woofer, which is used as a massage tool. Yes, that's right: You are massaged by a sub-woofer or woofer, at least. It's an okay massage, actually, done in time with the music.

Do you think there may be an acoustic leak from the jack hole? ~Tyll Hertsens

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

I saw this and instantly thought of the Howard Stern movie, and the subwoofer scene. And I saw that move years ago.

I'm tempted to put out audiophile remasters of these. DSD-only (as we all know that PCM hypnosis might cause brain cancer).

Does using power-amps with tone generators to power (or test) other (mains fed) equipment via a transformer for different voltages and frequencies qualify ?

The majority of those 'vibrating slimming devices' is nothing more than a (variable speed) motor with an un-balanced weight attached to it by the way.

Seriously why has no one made me a receiver/power amp I could fry eggs on? Then I would never have to go to the kitchen for food.

My father would string a bunch of CDs and hang them over the window ledge to prevent crows from perching.
