You can probably convert it to run the 45

Not so unlike what I'm trying to get Craig to do, but add in the AC heater circuit.  In his words (and he's only done it once before,) "the Moth 2A3 becomes the best amp I ever heard."  I'm probably going to have to throw money at him to get it done.  Maybe a nudge from Marv or whoever is on his good side these days will help.

Where can I get my Moth, please...?  Was in search for an old pair of Cicadas, but none found.

ML 304TL: Forced air-cooled?  Wonder whether that would be too 'noisy' for an audiophile environment.  A neat way to cool the tubes, nevertheless.

Are 304 tubes comparable to say 845s?

I searched for Cicadas for a while (including some WTB's on Audiogon and the like) but no dice.  Per Craig, the amps were designed to be top of the line but the speakers were designed for a budget and to that end they did have some serious limitations, though Marv has used the drivers in his own OB project with good results.

The 304TL isn't totally silent.  When I talked to Craig two years ago about remaking it (not happening) we discussed a workaround to the noise added from air cooling.  There's some cool stuff out there nowadays that was not really an option at the time, but ultimately Craig is not going to get involved, both due to the almost dying of electrocution story and due to the fact that he'd have to charge 20K minimum and sell a lot more than he did back then to make it worth it with the custom domes.

The 304TL is more comparable to the 833 tube that Wavac has in their 200K amps than to the 845.  The 845 is more like a souped up 45 (or 8 of them.)

The 304TL is a beast of a tube.  It was designed for use on aircraft carriers, powering massive speakers that would communicate with planes before they used today's modern tin-can-and-string approach.  It is rumored that they 304TL powers plutonium rock band Disaster Area's PA system.

It looks like the pair I posted pictures of finally listed recently, for 55K, no clue if it sold.  It was originally $20,000.  This pair originally belonged to Joel Marshall, and his cleaning lady (if I remember the story correctly) blew them up after turning the bias knobs on the top of the amp all the way down thinking they were volume knobs (which are on the front.)  They were repaired and sold to Omar who ran them in a pretty killer setup with those horns.

Moth is not coming back any time soon, at least not with Joel's involvement.  Its a shame as they made gear that has had no rival in this market period.  Joule Electra is stylistically the only brand I would label as similar.

Nelson Pass might have some Moth Cicada drivers. Send Mr. Pass a pm at DIYA. Craig sold a few hundred to him.

If you want Cicada type speakers, just get Lowther DX2s and put in a "pencil" type cabinet. Same type of sound. The point of the the Cicada's was their incredible value (better than Fostex Sigma, lower price). The Lowthers are better (faster and more resolving), but significantly more expensive, especially once you step up to the DX4s. I currently have the Lowther DX3s in my OB speakers.

Pass responded "I will be suing Moth Audio for the patents they infringed upon in their design of the Cicada drivers that I filed for after receiving the Cicada drivers."  So no dice there.

Interesting thing about the Cicada speakers:  The original Cicadas were plywood and sounded much nicer.  They were cheap though and later switched to MDF, which kind of killed their bonkers quality/cost thing.

Another interesting nugget is that the first shot in this thread:

Shows a super premo version of Bruce Edgar's Titan Horns paired with the Moth 304TL.  (Bruce is not dead by the way guys, sorry for that.)

Besides for the more popular (read:cheap) Cicadas, Moth also had the horn-loaded Empire system:

The L-90 Speakers utilized the REPS R-1 Ultra Drivers to give them 100Db/Watt efficiency.  You'll notice the downward facing horns.  The Sub uses a downward facing 18 inch JBL driver.  The sub is powered with a 500 Watt amplifier with internal crossover internally.

The designer of the horns?  Bruce Edgar.
