Sensaphonics dB check
« on: March 29, 2013, 01:23:12 AM »

Just auditioned the Sensaphonics dB Check courtesy of Kunlun.  Thx Kit Kat!!  It measures the incoming voltage over a duration set buy the user and correlates it with predetermined data from known IEMs.  This provides a relatively accurate reading of your inner ear dB level along with correlating standards for listening time (in minutes) based on NIOSH (n) and OSHA (o) recommendations.

Unfortunately, in order to get accurate readings you need to have one of the IEMs (Shure/Sensaphonics) that Sensaphonics has pre-programmed into its database.

Sensaphonics 3D Active Ambient IEM System (3D-1 and 3D-2)Sensaphonics 3MAXSensaphonics 2MAXSensaphonics 2X-SShure SE535 (effective Jan. 2011)Shure SE425 (effective Jan. 2011)Shure SE315 (effective Jan. 2011)

For my test I tried to get as close as possible with what I had in my inventory.  I dusted off my old Shure E2C (with cracked cable of course) and set the device to the Shure SE215.  The specs were not too far off so I assumed that I would get a decent reading assuming there isn't anything else being taken into consideration beyond basic specs.  This could be a bad assumption or maybe not.

E2C:
Sensitivity: 105 dB
Impedance: 16 ohms

SE215:
Sensitivity: 107 dB
Impedance: 20 ohms

This setup revealed an average listening level of 96dB over a 3 minute interval.   :'(  The recommended listening time was around 38 minutes for NIOSH and 240 minutes for OSHA standards respectively.  This time I set-up the UE RM and programmed the dB check for the Sensaphonics 2X-S (closest match).

UE RM:
Sensitivity: 98dB
Impedance: 21 ohms

Sensaphonics 2X-S:
Sensitivity: 100 dB
Impedance: 27 ohms

This yielded an average 86dB over the same 3 minutes with recommendations for 382 (n) and 836 (o) minutes.

Overall, I think it's a neat tool that I think would be nice to see implemented on other DAPs or Amps if done right.  Surprisingly, it did not hamper SQ that much at all.  A tad mid forward which was nice and not blurring over the details and imaging like poorly implemented amps do.  For this, it gets the coveted "Not Shit" award.  However, the price is a bit steep and there are limited IEMs to choose from.  Perhaps they could allow the user to program in the impedance and sensitivity to cover more phones.  I presume there must be other considerations to figure out SPL via voltage if th ey chose not to do this in the first place.  A cleaner UI would be welcome along with a lower price.

Cons:
-price
-limited IEM selection
-UI from Chinese hell
-yet another box to stack

Pros:
-Does its job/can save your ears
-Does not sound like shit
