Of course.

A warmer HD800 with technical ability between HD650 and HD800 > HD800

So they have to gimp HD700. This is not a design flaw. It's intentional.

This makes me think of something I used to ponder about Audeze.  Part of the frustration people have with them is because they don't do this kind of BS.  They have an improvement, and pass it on to the consumer.  They over-share at meets because they're so stoked about it (talking about the LCD-4 at the LCD-3 release, etc).  It doesn't work that well, but we do get better headphones from them as a result.  Because despite what anyone thinks about their sound sig, they are a pretty pure headphone company, run by 2 engineers excited about their projects instead of a marketing team making a PR gameplan.

I also wish they would have done something like that....

My impression is that for certain applications, studios WANT a headphone that is colored like the HD800 so it lights up problem spots in the recording, gives you a kind of worst case scenario.  Because like you have said, if a recording is perfect it won't be problematic on fairly colored gear.  So if they use something that is actually neutral, they might have to use more of their brains to figure things out.

That idea partly comes from the fact that almost all "studio monitor" headphones seem pretty bright.  What do you think Luis?  Would your Paradox work for all studio applications (in terms of sound signature)?

I have found that the "coloration" they tend to have is that they are strictly mid-centric. Most studio headphones (excluding the sales pitch type like the Sony ones) really tend to put the focus on the mid-range which makes some of them seem a bit bright to those accustomed to hearing full-range headphones.

As for my Paradox...it depends what engineer is listening. Mastering...I know they can pass. Mixing....pass. Monitoring...pass. However, this is me rating them. A lot of engineers, particularly mix engineers have hearing loss, especially in the highs, making them prefer bright headphones like the HD800 to something more balanced like the HE500.

When it comes to hi-fi, the phrase "Know thyself" is paramount. Last time I had my hearing checked (about a year ago), I could hear clearly from 20Hz to 19kHz. For my age, I was told that was fantastic. I'd be surprised if a mix engineer could hear well above 12kHz.

well i think headphone with close to flat top-end extension is not bad thing if most stuff you listen to have good dynamics cause things like cymbals will sound more natural. it still will sound bright depending on volume but will not be piercing cause i guess cause since the recording is more natural to the ears. most modern stuff, yea will sound very piercing. nowadays it's a must to have modern highs(gently rolled-off) even with speakers. also i guess how smooth the headphone and speaker is as well cause how smooth it is will affect it's performance overall.

For my profession my ears get checked every 5 years, and they still work very good too. I find most headphones bright though, not speakers, just headphones.

yea. more noticeable on headphones cause how close the drivers are to the ears. also highly depends on the volume you listen at too. i listen at pretty low volumes all the time since i'm sensitive to bright headphones with most music. i'm still very sensitive with electronics around my house since i can hear my monitors and modems and tv's in the house easily. can get annoying sometimes but most of time when i'm home i have headphones on. i still find headphones that actually measure close to flat across the full-range will not sound piercing if the song has good dynamics and no boosted high frequencies. my speakers can sound  bright too on some of stuff at reasonable volumes but not as bad also cause my room being well treated helps cause of the amount of absorption that takes place.

I am pretty keen to listen to Sennheiser HD700 , they are not available in the UK yet but only 1 more month to wait, I will line up my favourite tunes and have a listen, hoping they are close to Grago GS1000i which I can't afford! ::)

Let's say I know more about these than I would want to reveal at this time (what do you think usually happens when I get my grubby hands on a headphone?   ) EQ is great tool. EQ actually works very well on LCD3 and HD800. I hope this answers your question.

PM me to remind me again about this question when the product actually hits retail.

Apologies for the 3 year bump...

I'm new here, going through threads reading about HD800 vs HD700 vs HD650's.

I'm curious if you ever posted about the quality of the HD700's after eq'ing them to tame the 6khz peakiness? (I searched but didn't find much discussion about the HD700 & eq).
