^Firmware updates have been known to change the sound signature on some DACs for some revisions (PS Audio PerfectWave, for example).

Some changes inadvertently seem to be able to affect the sound and at times do not seem (or are admitted to be) understood.

The supposed reasons and changes are listed, I am not sure how many revisions there have been for the X-Sabre or if any have reportedly sounded different.  Maybe someone else can chime in or there is a revision history on the Matrix site?

I keep multiple versions of firmware around and reflash my DAC when desired.  Luckily, I can go back and forth if needed.  That's something else you may want to research.  Can you get a file package of older firmware versions that can force an older version to overwrite and install on the unit?

Hope that's a start.

My X-Sabre is currently on loan so I haven't tried it. I have tried the new firmware with the Mini-I Pro and I'm still having some stutter issues with high PCM sample rates.

I jumped off the fence and ordered an x-sabre today. Nobody commented on my observation of performance comparison between the x-sabre and PWD when only taking the USB connection into account so I am hoping for the best.

Once the beast arrives I will compare the effect of the firmware upgrade, subject to it being delivered with the old firmware installed.

Assuming you mean a MK2, both should have good USB inputs, but the DACs overall will likely be more dissimilar than not sonically.

The X-Sabre arrived today!

Unfortunately it would appear that it is either defective or incompatible with some of my equipment :(

It seems to work fine with the small amount of testing of the USB interface I have done but drops out when the coax input is used.

By way of example, when I connect my streamer/internet player it will play fine for about 20 minutes, thereafter the 48K led intermittently turns off/on and the audio mutes.  The Link and PCM light remain on throughout the scenario.

Could this be the symptom reported during the testing or is this something new?

BTW the unit arrived with the latest firmware installed.

Needless to say I will be returning the unit.
